About the Menu Editor

The Menu Editor is a two paned window displaying a Groups Tree and a Contents List that are used to edit Window Manager Menus.

The Groups Tree displays all the Groups in the Window Manager's Start Menu, Tool Bar, Icon Tray, etc. Each Group represents a Submenu or similar concept of grouping for a set of Items (depending on the Window Manager in question.

The Contents List displays all the Items and Subgroups in the Group that is currently selected on the Groups Tree.

The Progress Bar indicates if the window is currently busy.

The Status Bar can display information about selected objects, the highlighted function, or the verbose progress of an operation.

Opening WM Menus

The Window Manager Menus are automatically opened when you run Menu Editor using the following command:

Where <format> specifies the Window Manager Menu Format and therefore determines which menu configuration files to open.

For example, to run Menu Editor and open the IceWM menus, type:

Creating Items

To create a new Item:

  1. Select the position in the Groups Tree or Contents List where you want to create the new Item at.
  2. Go to File->New and select the type of item you want to create. If there were no errors then the new Item will have been created and you will be prompted for the new Item's name.
  3. Enter the new Item's name and then press ENTER

Editing Items

To edit an Item's properties:

  1. Select the Item that you want to edit the properties of.
  2. Go to Edit->Properties..., a Properties Dialog will appear (as shown below).
  3. Edit the properties as desired and then click on OK.

Different types of Items have different types of properties, the example shown above shows the properties for a regular Item.

To change an Item's icon, click on the Properties Dialog's Change Icon button, an Icon Selector will appear (as shown below).

Select a different Location as needed.

Select the desired icon and click on Select.

Depending on the Window Manager you are editing the menus of, the icons are stored in various locations. To add new icons you will need to create the icons (usually image files) and place them in the directory or directories that the Window Manager in question looks for.

To edit an Item's name:

  1. Select the Item that you want to edit the name of.
  2. Go to Edit->Rename, you will be prompted for the Item's new name.
  3. Enter the new name and press ENTER

Moving Items

To move an Item using Drag & Drop:

  1. Select the Item that you want to move (to select multiple items on the Contents List press and hold CTRL as you select).
  2. Press and hold Button1 while moving the pointer to a position on either the Groups Tree or Contents List and then release Button1.

Dropping the Item(s) on the Contents List will change the order of the Item(s), dropping the Item(s) on the Groups List will move them to another Group.

Holding CTRL while dropping the Item(s) will copy them.

Holding CTRL + SHIFT while dropping the Item(s) will link them.

To move an Item using Copy & Paste:

  1. Select the Item that you want to move (to select multiple items on the Contents List press and hold CTRL as you select).
  2. Go to Edit->Cut to copy and remove the Item(s).
  3. Select the new location on either the Groups Tree or Contents List where you want to Item(s) to be moved to.
  4. Go to Edit->Paste to paste the Item(s).

Deleting Items

To delete Item(s):

  1. Select the Item(s) that you want to delete.
  2. Go to Edit->Delete, you will be prompted to confirm the deletion of the selected Item(s).
  3. Click on Yes.

Saving WM Menus

You will be automatically prompted to save the Window Manager Menus to the configuration file(s) & apply it to the Window Manager each time you close the Menu Editor (go to File->Always Apply On Close to always save & apply when you close).

Save means to save the Window Manager Menus to the configuration file(s) and apply means to notify the Window Manager that the configuration file(s) have been updated and to reload them (if and only if the Window Manager is currently running).

To manually save the Window Manager Menus to the configuration file(s) at any time:

  1. Go to File->Save.

To manually save the Window Manager Menus to the configuration file(s) and apply at any time:

  1. Go to File->Save & Apply.
