The YDL Menu

With over 2000 applications available with Linux, there are often several available applications for each desired function. The Terra Soft Team has made special effort to select and organize a default, minimal application set into a series of categories which help you readily find and use them. These applications are showcased and discussed in brief detail on the Featured Applications page of the Terra Soft website. Remember, the packages installed by default are just a small selection of the vast quantity available to you via the YDL Install DVD and through online resources.

In this brief tutorial, let's take a quick look at how to find and launch the default applications, and then how to add new applications to your YDL Menu. It is important to note that with other operating systems, you may be accustomed to a start menu. In Yellow Dog Linux, we call this starting point the "YDL Menu".

Launch an application.
All Applications are available from the YDL "Start" Menu:
YDL Menu ==> Applications
... or by left-clicking the mouse on any available E17 desktop space.

Add an application.
Applications already or newly installed but not found in the Applications menu may be quickly added using the Applications Configuration interface. This utility presents all available, installed applications on the left and the menu options on the right.
  1. Launch the Applications Configuration interface:
    YDL Menu ==> Configuration ==> Applications Menu
  2. On the left side of the interface, select the "All Applications" box.
  3. On the right side of the interface:
    Applications ==> [sub-menu]
  4. Double-click the sub-menu into which you will add the new application, or right-click to create a new sub-menu.
  5. Right-click again to Refresh View and confirm the creation of your new directory.
  6. Drag the application to be added from the left side to the right side of the interface, into the open, preferred sub-menu.
  7. This new application is immediately available from the YDL Menu.

Create a new application.
Applications which do not immediately offer an icon in the Sorted list may be launched via a shell command via the "Create a new Application" box. An icon may then be applied to this new, graphical launcher.

Regenerate, Update Menu.
These buttons, found on the right side of the Applications Configuration interface, offer the following functions:
Regenerate - This will delete any customizations you have made, resetting back to the default settings.

Update - This will add new or remove old applications from the Applications menu. Your customizations will remain.
