Thus, the first 'cc' in the path must be 'gcc'. * Don't use gas or gnu-ld on your system, they work worse than the sun-shipped ones, assuming you have applied Sun ld patches 100170-06, 100170-10... Hence, delete gas or gnu-ld, or the build will fail miserably with ``as: warning: -k is an unknown flag''. * Don't #define BuildXInputExt YES or at compile time, something won't link in X11R6/xc/programs/Xserver/Xi/. The missing functions are in a file called stubs.c, which is not in the Imakefile OBJS. ``It would be incorrect to compile stubs.c by default. The functions in that file must be provided by the ddx that is supporting extension devices. See, for example, xc/programs/Xserver/hw/hp/input/x_hilinit.c. stubs.c is really just a form of documentation (admittedly a very misleading one).'' (XConsortium) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ld.so problems with R5-compiled apps (SunOS 4.1.3 only) Symptoms: Some applications compiled with R5 dynamically won't run with R6, ld.so barfs about some undefined functions. If you have the R6 libs path before R5 in your LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and defined the XKB stuff (default), the applications will take some of their shared libs in the R6 pool, except libX11.so.* which doesn't exist anymore, since it's now named libX11kb.so.4.20. This is because the XConsortium has not done a major increase in the SunOS 4.1.x major shared lib number... Fix: Add a symbolical link, from libX11.so.4.20 to libX11kb.so.4.20 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The compose key won't work The XConsortium says it's the applications fault, and they won't provide any patch for it. Who did the hack for X11R5 says he won't for R6. ``For example with any correctly written Motif, OLIT, or R6 Xaw based product, I make certain that my LANG environment variable is set, e.g. on Suns I do 'setenv LANG C; setenv LC_CTYPE iso_8859_1', on an SGI, I do 'setenv LANG fr_BE' or perhaps 'setenv LANG nl_BE', on an HP I do 'setenv LANG french', then I run the program. Then compose sequences work. Note: The definition of a correctly written program, in this case, is defined as a program that calls XtSetLanguageProc prior to initializing the Intrinsics. [...] xterm has not been internationalized, so compose processing won't work. You might try hterm or cxterm; Martin Forssen (maf@math.chalmers.se) has made a patch to xterm to internationalize it: http://www.dtek.chalmers.se:80/~maf/i18n/. As much as I think xterm ought to be internationalized, I'm doubtful that it will happen any time soon. If you really need xterm to be internationalized then you'll have to use one of the above options.'' Details here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X11R6 binary distribution for sparc-sun-sunos4.1.3 ftp://ftp.enst.fr/pub/unix/X11/X11R6/ ftp server also holds the R6 distribution and fixes, however you should seek a closer server to download it. A binary distribution of X11R6 for sparc-sun-sunos4.1.3, compiled with gcc, is also available there, in ftp://ftp.enst.fr/pub/unix/X11/X11R6/local/. The tar.gz file is 20 Megabytes big. Be sure to check out the various README* and site.def we have used, since you have no need to download it if you don't want the same compilation setup.
