James P. Schwar Biography Page

I am currently employed by Lafayette College in the Computer Science Department. My interest in computing began in 1960 with an IBM 1620. I have been involved with computers as an academic computer center director and professor of computer science since that time.

During my academic tenure, I spent a semester's leave at AT&T to study computer networks. My appreciation for Unix and its embedded networking capabilities has grown since then. The recent upgrading of our departmental laboratory to Sun workstations and the Solaris operating system lead to the development of the scheme for propagating password files across an NFS network as discussed in the tutorial article.

I've always enjoyed working with computer hardware and software and I look forward to hearing from readers of this UnixWorld Online article via e-mail at schwarjp@lafcol.lafayette.edu.
