This is the March 1998 issue of the MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial. Over
the last three years we have covered many topics relating to becoming
more productive with your Mac. Also, literally hundreds of tips have been
published to assist our members. Some of the other benefits of the
newsletter are:
- Membership in the private MacTalk Mailing List
- Membership in the MacAssistant Online User Group
- Great offers and discounts on hardware and software
- Special pricing for User Group Newsletter Editors
- Members favorite web sites
This month is a three part tutorial on using URL Manager PRO. Learn how
to get your bookmarks in order using this great piece of shareware.
Past tutorials have included Clarisworks, Launcher, Arranging your Hard
Disk, Formatting of Hard Disks, Fonts, Apple Menu Options, The Black Art
of SCSI and many more.
The MacAssistant Tips and Tutorial Newsletter only has tips and
tutorials. I do not do reviews in this newsletter. While reviews are
useful, I feel that a newsletter that actually tells you how to use your
Mac more effectively is much more useful to the novice and intermediate
users. Each issue includes many tips about using your Mac. The tutorials
are accompanied by graphics that help to understand the article. This is
a shareware product that has even more information for those that
register. This month's tutorial article is available to subscribers only.
This newsletter is distributed as a DocMaker application. No other
software is needed.

Subject: [*] Atom in a Box - Real-time Quantum Orbitals for Macintosh
Filename: Orbitals (411,503 bytes)
Subj: Atomic Orbitals on Macintosh Date: May 8, 1998
Keywords: Science, Education, Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Orbital, Atom
Abs: This archive contains version 1.0 of Atom in a Box, an educational
program that aids in visualizing the Hydrogenic atomic orbitals, a prime
and otherwise unwieldy example of quantum mechanics. Requires a PowerPC
Macintosh. See for more info.
Desc: Unlike other tools in this category, this program raytraces through a
three-dimensional cloud density that represents the wavefunction's
probability density and presents its results in real-time (up to 48 frames
per second on the latest hardware). The user interface is very interactive
and provides a wide degree of flexibility.
It contains all 140 eigenstates up to the n=7 energy level and the allowed
spectral transitions between those eigenstates. It also allows a state
formed by a superposition of up to eight of those eigenstates allowing for
over 3 trillion possible states. The program can display a wavefunction as a
picture of a cloud, use color as phase, plot in red-cyan left/right for 3D
glasses, and slice the wavefunction.
You can download a copy of it and see demonstrations of its output at:
For individual users, this software is US $20 shareware. Once you register,
I'll send you a registration code that eliminates the shareware reminder.
Thank you for your attention,
Dean Dauger
The archive contains a PowerPC Macintosh application and a Read Me.

Subject: [*] Chronomenon 2.0.1
Chronomenon's Features:
--Chronomenon is a software alarm clock and timer which, when its alarm
goes off, can crow like a rooster, display and speak your text messages,
play QuickTime movies, and, new with version 2.0, play audio CD's.
--The alarm can be configured to automatically set itself to go off at the
same time each day (this feature was recently added, first added to version
2.0).
--Whenever the alarm is set, Chronomenon shows how many hours, minutes, and
seconds there are left before the alarm goes off.
--Chronomenon's clock face takes up just a few square inches (centimeters)
of screen space, and it can be moved around and hidden.
--Chronomenon can run and sound its alarm in both the foreground and
background.
System Requirements:
To use Chronomenon, you will need a Macintosh computer running System 7 or
greater, Sound Manager 3.0 or greater, and about 1,600 kilobytes of memory
free for running applications. If you have PlainTalk speech-synthesis
software from Apple installed, Chronomenon can speak messages when its
alarm goes off. If QuickTime is installed, Chronomenon can play QuickTime
movies. If you have version 5.1 or greater of the Apple CD-ROM CD driver
software installed, and your computer has at least one CD drive,
Chronomenon can play audio CD's.

Subject: [*] dataComet dataComet4.5.1
dataComet 4.5.1 is an Internationalizable AppleScriptable Macintosh Telnet
SOCKS V4 application featuring 16-Color PC-ANSI, VT220, & TN3270 terminal
emulation, multiple sessions, flexible and easy-to-use key remapping, edit
windows, macro recording, modeless dialogs, and ZMODEM and TFTP file transfer.
dataComet is compatible with MacTCP/OpenTransport and serial interfaces on
Macintosh Systems from 6.0.7 through 8.1. No-nag Shareware, $20 ($10
Educational/Library), Site licenses available.
On-line documentation allows you to get help instantly on any menu
command or dialog option by pressing the Control key while selecting the
option.
Session configurations are saved as documents which can be launched
directly from the Finder. Modeless dialogs simplify configuration of
session options and macro mappings. The AppleScript interface allows other
applications to open dataComet sessions, execute dataComet macros, and
monitor session status.
"Command-click" opens URLs in dataComet windows through Internet Config.
Files downloaded using ZMODEM can be launched automatically using Internet
Config's File Mappings. (Two supporting applications, dataComet-Brown and
dataComet-NCSA, are provided to allow Telnet URL launches from Netscape.)
Macro commands can be invoked through mouse clicks, configurable
on-screen buttons, menu items, and key-remapping, and also on host open and
close to perform logins and logoffs automatically. Macros can be recorded
as you interact with the host to ease creation of reliable macros.
dataComet's terminal windows offer fast, high quality emulations with
searchable scrollback buffers. A full complement of fonts are included;
dataComet's emulators also automatically display variable-width fonts as
mono-spaced fonts. Sessions can be logged automatically.
dataComet's edit windows send text or commands to a host when the Enter
key is pressed (Command-Return breaks a line and sends it to a host, easing
use of host-based Chat programs). Keyed commands can be used to search,
move the cursor, and reformat text by adding or removing line breaks and
leading blanks or tabs.
dataComet offers both QuickDraw and direct serial printing, so that both
WYSIWYG and fast printing are available.
dataComet also supports secure configurations for computers used as
public-access terminals; a launch macro can disable commands which are
inappropriate for your particular application.

Dingbat Magician is a program that uses dingbat fonts to create colorful
logos, patterns and designs. Dingbat Magician's free-form working
environment allows users to manipulate picture fonts without having to
memorize keyboard equivalents or deal with dingbats in a clunky "word
processing" manner. Dingbats are treated as discreet objects in a
drawing-program like environment. Once a design has been created, Dingbat
Magician objects can be exported to other programs like Illustrator or
Freehand for further manipulation. Like our other software products,
Dingbat Magician is made to be "simply useful."
This shareware product is fully functional so you can try before you buy.
Version 2.0 is free to registered users of previous versions. Please
email with your registration/invoice number for your unlocking password.
Version 2.0.1 includes change of address information.
----------
New in Version 2.0:
* PowerPC Native! (680x0 version also available)
* Improved User Interface
* Work with up to three different dingbat fonts at once
* Faster grouping and ungrouping
* Enhanced keyboard equivalents
* Option-drag objects to create duplicate copies (ala Illustrator and
Freehand)
* A KwikModify Submenu for frequently-used commands
* A Key Chart Window to view and print key equivalent charts
* More affordable shareware "unlocking" fee (disk version still same
price)
* Now requires a color system and color monitor
* Rudimentary drawing tools removed to make program leaner and more
focused

Subject: [*] Eradicator kills new Mac worm. Freeware.
Eradicator v.1.0.1 is freeware which removes the new Mac worm Autostart
9805. It is released as a service to Mac users by Hong Kong IT company
Uptown Solutions Ltd.
Autostart 9805 infects PPC Mac OS systems (7 & 8) with QuickTime 2.0 or
above and with mounted HFS or HFS+ volumes and CD-ROM AutoPlay enabled. It
adds invisible files to every disk partition and periodically causes
extensive disk activity (and network activity if network disks are
mounted). Will overwrite some data files with random data. The worm can be
transmitted via almost any HFS or HFS+ disk volume, including floppy disks,
most removable cartridges drives, MO disks, CD-WORM disks, hard disks and
even disk images. The worm will also spread across networks to any mounted
network file partition.
Although Autostart 9805 can be removed manually using a resource editor,
Eradicator was written to ease the process. Click the Scan button to start
scanning the mounted volumes. Eradicator will report what it finds in a
window. If it finds the virus on any of the mounted volumes, it will
attempt to fix it. If the attempt is successful, a placeholder will be put
in place so that your computer is immune to future infection.

FrameBlenderQT is a QuickTime Movie Export component. With FrameBlenderQT
installed on your Mac you can use Apple MoviePlayer to export a single
PICT generated by blending together every frame of a QuickTime movie.
This is useful for combining several noisy frames of the same scene into
one crisp clean snapshot. Since the noise is different in every frame,
blending many frames together acts to cancel out the noise.Anyone who
uses a video camera to grab stills can benefit from this.
Alternative uses include simulating a time exposure by blending the
frames of a time lapse movie and creating motion blur effects by blending
frames with movement.
This is version 1.0b1, the first public beta. This version requires a
Macintosh with Apple's QuickTime software. It works with MoviePlayer 2.5
and MoviePlayer 3.0 Pro.

Subject: [*] Poppet 1.0v1 - Mac OS 8 Pop-up Window enhancer
About 'Poppet'
Poppet (pronounced 'pop it') is a simple extension which removes what I
consider to be an annoying feature of Mac OS 8's Pop-up windows. (A Pop-up
window is one which sits at the bottom of the screen with just its title
Tab showing.)
When a Pop-up window is in its collapsed state, a click on its tab will
immediately show the entire contents of the window. This is great. However,
when it is in its collapsed state and you try to drag something into it,
instead of opening up completely, the Finder opens up (and updates) the
window in stages. This makes it really hard to quickly locate the correct
item you are trying to drag onto as it has either not been brought on
screen yet, or is scrolling away from you whilst you try to catch up with
it.
Poppet simply forces the Finder to open up a Pop-up window fully in one go
when something is being dragged over it.
System requirements:
* Mac OS 8 or later

Subject: [*] ramBunctious 1.3 -- a Mac OS RAM disk
ramBunctious 1.3 is a shareware ($12) RAM disk program for the Mac OS.
Its rich set of features lets you customize your RAM disks for your
desired balance of speed, security, safety, and versatility.
- You can have several RAM disks mounted simultaneously, limited only
by memory available.
- ramBunctious has a "write-through" option. When activated, everything
written to the RAM disk is saved to a (real) file. This means that
the next time you mount the RAM disk, all the contents are still
there. This helps protect against data loss in the event of a crash
or power failure.
- ramBunctious uses normal application memory. This means that when
you're done using a RAM disk, that memory is available for other
applications to use. In other words, you don't have to reboot to
reclaim the memory.
- Each RAM disk may be configured to be mounted automatically during
the computer's startup process.
- These options, and more, are fully user-configurable for each RAM
disk via a status/settings window. In addition to the settings, the
status window includes LED-like access indicators that flash when the
RAM disk is being read from or written to.
What is new in ramBunctious 1.3?
Customers have spoken. We've listened. Here is the release to prove it.
Every feature in ramBunctious 1.3 was a direct response to a feature
request by a registered user. Thanks to ramBunctious users for making
this release possible.
- ramBunctious can now be fully controlled by AppleScript. There are
several sample scripts to give examples of using ramBunctious via
this powerful interface.
- A RAM-only checkbox is available when creating RAM disks, so no
space is necessary on the hard drive for the image file when
creating new RAM disks
- ramBunctious now remembers the name of the RAM disk volume, even
when it's RAM-only.
- The documentation display mechanism has been significantly improved.
ramBunctious 1.3 is available now. Download links and more information
are available at the ramBunctious web site:
