Ian. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 09:13:21 -0400 From: Marlon Deason Subject: [A] Beeps and browser delays I have a PowerBook 5300 and I also get one prolonged beep every once in a while. Here's my theory and I'm pretty sure it is correct, but I will include a way to prove it right if you are obsessed enough that you have to know. I most often get the long beep while waiting for a webpage to load, but I sometimes also get it while waiting for a CDROM to mount. I believe on our machines (both PowerBooks are very simular specs, yours has a slightly faster processor) the processor can get back logged while accessing a device which is capable of sending lots of data. When you click to load a new webpage or click on a CDROM icon, the system jumps into high gear and trys to access that information in a hurry. If you were to accidently click again or if some other process needs your attention (usually signified by a dialog box and a beep) these take a backseat to accessing that ton of data. So in essence the beep is still processed by the computer is cocentration its CPU power on the flood of data it was processing and the beep takes much longer to execute that normal. I used to get them quite a lot when I used virtual memory. Virtual memory lets your computer use your hardddrive as extra RAM, further gumming up the works when disk access speed is important. After cutting out Virtual memory the beep just about disappeared. Recently I added a larger faster harddrive and I haven't had a delaied beep since. Here is how you can prove my theory right. Open the control strip and look for the little harddrive icon. You can option + click on it and drag it to the end and then shrink the control strip tab down to just the harddrive icon if you want. Just leave the strip open. If you get a prolonged beep, look at the strip. If the strip has activity lines (like in a cartoon when something is moving) then the disk is spinning and the CPU may be busy. If the disk is quite when the prolonged beep occurs, then I would have to be something else. Oh yeah, and you are mistaken Microsft Internet Exploiter is not the better browser, Netscape 3.04 Gold is :-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 21:00:32 +0100 From: Ian Goldby Subject: [A] Book/Software to Learn C, C+ or C++ >Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 09:59:55 -0400 >From: "R. You can use Windows sounds, but you will find it easier to convert them to a suitable native Mac format. There are many utilities to do this, and I use SoundApp by Norman Franke, which is FreeWare. I hope it is still available from the info-mac archive, but if not, there are plenty of other possibilities. If you convert the windows sounds (usually in .wav format) to a System 7 Sound, you can just drop the converted file in the Shutdown Items folder in the System folder to make it play on shutdown. You could do a similar thing for a startup sound. In this case, it is the (you guessed it) Startup Items folder. Finally, if you drag such a file onto the System File itself in the System Folder, you will find that it is added to the list of alert sounds in the Sounds control panel. If you want to do more complicated things and assign sounds to particular events, you will need extra software. I once saw something that did this, but I can't remember. Not recommended if you want to get any serious work done 8-) This all applies to System 7. I expect that the details will be more or less the same for Mac OS 8. I have an HP Laserjet 4M directly connected to the G3. I was having no problems under System 8.1 using the HP printer drivers. I then did a clean install of 8.5, and added 8.5.1 the next day. The next time I went to print form Word 98, the Desktop Printer icon acquired the text picture overlay, the hard drive started making "I'm processing the print job" noises, but nothing happened, the drive kept spinning but nothing printed. I downloaded the latest printer drivers from HP and reinstalled them, but printing was erratic.. I could not print from Word; other programs sometimes printed, sometimes not. So I installed the Laserwriter 8 driver that came with 8.5. Now I can print from Word. Well, sort of. Sometimes it will print OK, although it takes much longer to process than it used to. More often, it begins processing, and I see the blinking light on the HP that indicates it's receiving a job. Then the blinking stops and the HP produces an "Error 40" message. According to the HP manual, this means that the printer is not receiving information from the computer. The manual suggests pushing the "continue" button on the printer, but this doesn't work. If I turn the printer off & on again, the print job will go through once the printer has finished self-testing. Of course, in the mean time, I have to cope with all sorts of "can't find printer" error messages from the Print Monitor. These are strictly text files--no graphics or fancy fonts; they're business correspondence. There isn't even a letterhead. The problem is most severe with Word 98, but I've had it happen with everything form Excel to Netscape. Neither Norton nor Disk First Aid can find anything wrong. I distinctly remember watching at the Apple conference an iMac G3/233 outrun a P2/400 in a live demo: http://www.thesanctuary.com/power/ So either the benchmarks given here aren't representative of the processor's true speed, or the statistics are skewed on Intel's side for these tests. From these benchmarks, it would seem the Yosemite 400 Mhz is still slower on floating point processing than a P2/400 let alone a P3, and that the same machine is only faster than the P3 450 and slower Intels. It also says that the G3/266 is slower than the P2/400 which is not the case in the live demo at the URL above. Are Bytemark tests truly representative? These only measure integer speed. Where is this twice as fast for the same Mhz speed that I see in the Bytemark tests that I don't see in the Spec95 tests? Where can I find more benchmarks to convince PC users the Macs are really faster? And please no AppleInsider, or rumors site. These have to be reliable sources. My preferred email application is Claris Emailer 2.0.3 although I've tried Outlook Express and Eudora Lite. My control panels are set to disconnect me from my ISP if the connection is idle for 30 minutes. My problem happens too often to count: I login, open my email app and try to check my mail. Nothing happens and after a few seconds, I receive a message that I've been disconnected. Upon reconnecting, a solid link is formed and the problem does not recur until my next login. My ISP blamed, alternately, the phone lines and the fact that I'm on a Mac. In short, he has no idea what's wrong. Global Village recommended the ROM upgrade. Their customer service clerk virtually hung up on me (saying he had other calls in the queue) when I asked his help in probing the cause of my probleml; their tech support hasn't responded to my email for assistance. I've tried rebuilding Emailer's database on the assumption that something was wrong with the application's operations. Both "regular" and "advanced" rebuilds have been ineffective in eliminating the disconnects. My attempt at using Eudora Lite failed when, for no apparent reason, the application started giving me messages that my smtp host didn't recognize the address of the recipient of my email messages. I first noticed this problem with Acrobat reader 3 or so. (I think that version 2 worked ok. or at least did with an Imagewriter.) Last week I got the version 4.0 of the Acrobat and in the Readme.pdf was the note that getting error -3118 was the result of using a version of Laserwriter print drivers older than 8.5.1. They offered ftp links two versions-the Apple version and the Adobe version. At least the the Apple version could correctly print the Acrobat 4.0 Readme.pdf correctly. The adobe version could not. To get the Majel Barrett to say "deactivation complete" when you shut down the computer, you need to put a system 7 sound file into the "Shutdown Items" folder in your System Folder. The point to grasp, however is that the "SoundApp" program will convert *all* the sounds in the "Appearance" sound track into separate system 7 sounds in one go. Do not bother downloading individual sounds one at a time from the Internet -you can download a complete set. These include things like communicator noises, turbo lift, borg ship. If you download the "Borg" appearance set, you also get the "assimilated" icons and the mechanical voice which says "we will add your biological distinctiveness to our own" every time you insert a disk. However, like the Enterprise crew, you may prefer not to be "assimilated"! http://www.clixsounds.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 10:39:17 -0500 From: rweeks@mail.clark.net (Robert Weeks) Subject: UMAX Astra 1220S At http://www.umax.com/support I found an addendum to the 1220 Manual that describes in somewhat better detail how to use the machine. Also included is an explanation for why the lamp goes off during disuse. (it goes into the power saving mode). I looked about the site in your sig and couldn't find the problem page but here's my $0.02: When accessing a local file your mac (or PC) knows what kind of file it is and how to deal with it. Once on your server your computer cannot understand how to use the file unless it gets an appropriate enc type (eg. 'text/html' for html files or 'audio/x-wav' for wav files). If your server doesn't announce what enc type to use your browser will just download the file. I am guessing that people who hear the appropriate sound have their browser set to play the sound once it is downloaded ... but it is just playing a downloaded file. You should check with voicenet to be sure they support the enc type needed for the sound file you are using. > I've created some web pages one of which is linked to a .wav file. >When I test the local page on my computer (PowerMac 7500 with Netscape >4.5.1) the browser loads the file, the small "controller icon" appears and >the sound plays as it is supposed to. > After the pages are uploaded to my server and I access them with >the same computer and the same browser and attempt to play the sound, the >"controller" icon does not appear and no sound is audible; instead the file >is downloaded. > I've asked friends (most of whom have PC's) to access my site and >the page behaves as it should; they are able to play the sound. A couple of >folks with Macs played the sound successfully. The problem lies with the translation of mime types. Since others are able to play the sounds correctly, the problem is in the configuration of your browser. There is a table of mime types to file types and programs in your browser. When you play it on the Mac, it is using the file type. When you retrieve it from the server it uses the mime type the server provides to figure out how to "display" the data (or in this case play it). Apparently your configuration for the mime type wav uses (audio/wav) is not set correctly. -- Doug ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 1999 09:11:12 -0700 From: Doug Hardie Subject: WriteNow First of all I want to thank "David Huston" , Dan Waylonis , mlincoln@usd294.org, Mike Alexander , Marshall Gilliland , "Martin S. Zibulsky" , and abrody@smart.net for suggestions and assistance. After much experimentation I have determined that WriteNow is not completely compatable with OS 8.5.1. While the basic functions seem to work ok, if I have a table in the document it will fairly quickly cause WriteNow to crash. The only way to recover from this is to do a clean installl of the OS and then all the subsequent applications. After that WriteNow will run fine until I start working with files with tables again. It would appear, as one person suggested, that the table code is not 32-bit clean. Since I use tables frequently, I have reluctantly decided to switch to Nisus since it offers most of the WriteNow features. In particular I would be dead without a good spell checker. Unfortunately I have over 12 years of WriteNow archives going back to version 1 to convert. -- Doug -------------------------------- --Info-Mac-Digest-- End of Info-Mac Digest ******************************
