Subject: Summary: Noisy Performa
Hi all,
and thanks to the many who replied - too many to answer individually. It seems that noise
becomes a common problem on the Performa 5200 (and similar computers) after a while. The
main reason which was mentioned over and over again is the fan (because of dust accummulating
inside the computer), and a cleaning should do the trick. But so far I haven't yet figured out how
to get inside (I got as far as sliding out the tray with the motherboard) ...
Thanks again!

Subject: (Q) Toggling remote access configurations
On my Power Mac 7500, I've installed OS 8.1, OT 1.3, ARA 3.0. I'm making
PPP connections using the Remote Access control panel. I have two ISP's. I
toggle between these 2 using the Remote Access control strip module. I find
however that the control strip toggles between the configurations selected
from the Remote Access control panel, but does not toggle between the
tcp/ip configurations selected from the TCP/IP control panel. If I
understand what's happening correctly, there are 2 separate sets of
configuration files--each created by the 2 different control panels.
Is there any control strip module available that simultaneously toggles the
Remote Access and TCP/IP configuration files?
Thanks!

There was once a great web page by E.Bennet at:

It no longer appears to be there. Any idea where it has moved to or if it

Subject: [Q] Occasional freezes at the end of boot up
Hi,
I have a powerbook 5300ce (32Mb ram, OS 8.1, HFS+ filesystem) that has
for the most part work flawlessly for the past two years.
In the last two weeks it has developed a strange quirk where the boot up
process will freeze just before completion. By that I mean the system
will freeze after loading all extensions and clearing the "MacOS"
startup picture but before any icons are drawn on the desktop or a
menubar is written across the top of the screen. Pressing the reset
button and letting the machine reboot always solves the problem (i.e..
it never freezes twice in a row on a reboot). The freezes appear to
only happen on a cold restart, but my memory could be playing tricks on
me there.
I've tried disabling the last software I've installed (Norton Antivirus)
and replacing the finder and finder prefs but the problem persists. Any
ideas out there? It finally dawned on me to try and rebuild the desktop
this morning and after rebooting three times to test it out, this seems
to have worked. But, I'll be more convinced of this after a week of
startups...
Thanks for your help,

Subject: [Q] Printer module on Control Strip
As a byproduct of having to reinstall system 8 (more formally known as Mac
OS8) on my hard drive, I ended up installing Control Strip, which I had
previously avoided due to extreme territoriality of desktop acreage, but
since last opportunity have put on a third monitor and am willing to
dedicate a few pixels across the bottom of the tertiary monitor to Control
Strip...
It comes with a printer-chooser module. On my box, half the time at bootup
the printer-chooser module is greyed out, you can't click it. Other half
the time, it *looks* viable but when it click it, it goes grey.
Machine: 7100/80
Printers: StyleWriter II, NEC SuperScript 3000M, Fax Sender (Apple Telecom)
Drivers in System Folder: StyleWriter 1200 (better than II driver);
NECSS3000M; Fax Sender; LaserWriter8 (not currently attached to any such
device).
Any clue as to why this control strip should be acting so funky? I mean,
is it a common-knowledge sort of thing ("Oh yeah, the printer chooser in
Control Strip, we all throw that out, it doesn't work"; or "Yeah, it's
incompatible with the Fax Sender driver, didn't you know that?"), or
perhaps someone has a clue about why this module isn't working?
QuicKeys printer chooser commands work OK, for what THAT'S worth. i.e., I
could ditch this module if a more useful one were to come down the pike,
...but Control Strip seems to expect you to deploy a minimum of 7 modules,
and I only have 6 working at the moment.

Dear UK info-maccers,
I'm looking for a UK internet service provider. Does anyone have any
experience, good or bad, with the Lerwick-based company Zetnet? Do you
get a reliable connection? Is it easy to get through first time? Are
downloads reasonably fast?
I called their techincal support line at 7pm on a Thursday evening and
it was answered in 4 rings. They told me they were established in 1994
and have just over 10000 subscribers. They couldn't tell me how many
modems they have, but did say they had received 'not many complaints'
from people who couldn't get through. They charge 90 per annum (inc.
VAT) for unlimited internet access, 5MB web space, but only 1 email
address. For 50 per annum, you get 6 hours a month and no web space. I
haven't yet found anywhere that beats these prices.
Thanks for any recommendations.

Subject: Driving Motorola into the enemy camp (C)
It looks like Apple's axing of Motorola's MacOS licence may have had an
adverse side-effect. Once upon a time, Microsoft were developing Windows NT
for PowerPC, but they abandoned that a while back. Now that Apple have
revoked Motorola's MacOS licence, leaving them with an expensive Mac-clone
manufacturing operation, it appears that Microsoft and Motorola are
collaborating on porting Windows NT to PowerPC platforms.
No matter how good Rhapsody and MacOS X turn out to be, Apple have shot
themselves in the foot. NT on Intel and Alpha is rapidly turning into a
platform of choice for heavy-duty engineering applications (which Apple --
stupidly -- have always avoided encouraging for MacOS), and an increasing
number of graphics/DTP shops seem to be migrating to NT on Intel boxes
(e.g. Intergraph machines). NT on PowerPC may be the combination that
finally kills our favourite operating system. Apple needs to respond _now_
by showing support for _all_ varieties of processor-intensive applications,
and they need to demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt the superiority of
Rhapsody/MacOS X over NT.

Subject: Findit and Disk Fit Problem
I am currently using a PowerMac 6500/225, with its IDE HD, and OS 7.6.1.
When I purchased my external Zip drive, I was still using an old IIsi with
an external APS HD,and I was able to use the packaged Dantz software,
comprising Disk Fit and Findit for my back-ups. Since switching to the
PowerMac, back-up from the internal IDE HD does not work smoothly, because
Findit seems unable to recognise the IDE drive and hence there is no
automatic cataloguing of HD contents, making every back-up a new one,
taking for ever to complete.
Is there any cure for this, such as an update of Findit that recognises IDE
drives?
This is my second cry for help, the first having gone unanswered!

Dear Digest readers,
As some are probably already aware of DataViz's product, you may want to
ignore this. But I translated a Word 97 PC document into WriteNow 4.0 for
the Mac. That is a downgrade of 3 years (Word 97 from 1997, WriteNwo 4.0
from 1994). Formatting, font size, boldface were all preserved. Text was
centered, the way it was centered on the Word document. Bullets were
preserved. But the most remarkable thing was, two images that were copied
off the web into the Word 97 document were also preserved in the new
WriteNow 4.0 document.
This was with DataViz MacLinkPlusPC 9.7.
Who says Mac and PC aren't compatible. Print out a copy of this to your PC
friends who claim this.
P.S. I have been using Dataviz's products since 1992 without a problem.

DataViz FileView correctly identifies the file (WordWindows 6.0) and
