Dear Ladies and/or Gentlemen -
I noticed letters from readers when I stumbled upon your wonderful site
today and would like to get the following posted. Please let me know if I
need to do this another way.
I have a 31/2 year old Performa 6205 with a 15" multiscan display that is
going south (remember back in the '50's how your picture on your TV would
start to shrink at top and bottom as the set got older? That's what this
display is doing). Two questions: Is this normal wear-out or should I
really be making a pest of myself with Apple (they've already said "no" to
repairing for free, though they had not seen a problem like that)? Second,
let's assume I need to replace the monitor - anybody have suggestions as to
where to go for a used or refurbished replacement (or even a new replacement
at minimal cost)?
Please excuse my return e-mail address - I'm doing this at work due to my
1/4 usable screen at home.

It expanded to HyperCard Player 2.4.smi OK. However, my MAC will not run

It is seen as an unknown document rather than an application. Type/creator

How can I get Hypercard Player to run?

Subject: (C) Poor service from MacPowerHouse and OrangeMicro
Dear Digest readers,
MacPowerHouse (the reseller for OrangeMicro) said they would call
OrangeMicro and tell them I was having an installation problem, and that
OrangeMicro would call me back. I have waited two weeks and seen no such
call back.
OrangeMicro has no toll free support center, and they keep hours that barely
give me an hour before they close to get the problem resolved.
I would like to use the built in ethernet card of my Mac to talk over a
TCP/IP network on cable internet using the OrangePC Windows 95 software.
Unfortunately time and again it recognizes either the wrong network card, or
installs a driver that conflicts with my monitor driver. What a mess!
This is an OrangePC 620 running a PowerMac 7200/75.
What's more is that in spite of the fact the OrangePC card having 16MB of
RAM installed on it, my game software such as Douglas Adams Starship Titanic
says I don't have 16MB of RAM. The System info says I only have 15MB of
RAM. I go into the IRQ settings and find that 1MB is eaten up by the
display driver. I can decrease it to 0.5MB, but that causes more problems
than it is worth. Is there anyway to put the entire display driver in
virtual memory?
I did e-mail OrangeMicro on one of these issues, and they simply gave me a
reply that doesn't make sense:
1. Turn off TCP/IP
2. Run the OrangePC program
3. disconnect the ethernet cable
4. Switch to the PC mode
5. put the cable back in when the Windows 95 screen loads.
Unfortunately this simply crashes Windows 95, or Windows 95 doesn't yet
recognize the built in
ethernet card.
Any help I can get would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
a frustrated

Subject: (Q) Sitemill alternative
Dear Digest readers,
Yes I've used Big Brother, Frontpage 1.0, BBEdit, and Sitemill 2.0, as well
as
WebArranger. Still I have yet to find a utility that will do ALL of the
following:
1. Check for broken links of telnet://, gopher://, ftp://, mailto:, in
addition to http://
2. Check an entire web site of over 2000 links. Sitemill is limited to 600
links before crashing
with a Type 12 error. This is even with a lofty 19MB partition given to it
in the FInder Get Info box.
3. Click on a link and, launch, and browse to the site with the browser of
your choice.
4. Click on a link representing the file that contains the broken link for
editing, and allow you
to edit it in BBEdit, or Pagemill, or better yet actively change the link
from within the program.
Sitemill does this, however you have to confirm each change.
5. List all links alphabetically, or by file where found.
6. List the status of a link, whether broken or moved, or active.
7. Consistantly be able to register sites that have built in CGI scripts,
animated images, and/or Java as active. Sitemill reports even Apple's home
page as a broken link, even though I can browse right to it.
8. Not require Internet Config to run.
Any recommendations?
Thank you.

The Digest Issues are probably complete.
But some contributors unfortunately include lines of "_"s, in their
signatures or elsewhere. The long lines of "-"s cause trouble for some MIME
readers. Any line of "-"s that is longer that the article separator,
"------------------------------" ,
can cause the MIME reader to choke. (By enclosing the string in quotes, I
hope to have avoided causing the problem in this message.)
Whether you are affected by this problem is determined by what e-mail
reader software you use. Some have problems; others do not.
The Digest managers ought to be able to filter out such problem strings,
but for some reason they are failing to do so.

>but you guessed it: the files are huge.
First, make sure you select the correct setting from line-art, grey
scale, 8 bit colour, or full colour, depending on what the picture is.
If you want to scan a colour picture and print it in black and white,
then obviously don't scan it in colour, scan it in grey scale - the file
will be much smaller. Line-art is for black and white images that have
no shades of grey, and generally compress to very small sizes when you
save them.
Scanning resoloution: It all depends on what you want to do with the
picture. If you want it for display on screen, then you should match the
scanning resolution to the screen resolution, which is 72dpi. So far, no
difficulty and nice small files.
Printers are slightly more complicated, because they imitate greyscale
and colour graduations by using dot patterns. A dot from a printer is
either pure black or pure white, or for a colour printer, pure black,
cyan, magenta, or yellow. So it takes several printer dots to represent
one dot of an arbitrary colour from the picture, varying the number of
printed dots according to pixel brightness. Look through a magnifying
glass at a print-out to see what I mean.
In general, a 600dpi printer will not show any more detail in a picture
scanned at more than 200dpi, and 120dpi will probably still look quite
acceptable. Sometimes the printing software will specify a screening
frequency in lines per inch (usually PostScript laser printers - less
usual for ink-jets). In this case, then for best quality set the
scanning resolution to double the printer's screening frequency, or for
normal quality one and a half times. Only if you are printing line-art
do you need to scan the image at the printer's dots per inch resolution,
because then and only then does one dot on the printer represent one
pixel on the image.
One last thing: If you intend to enlarge the image, you need to increase
the scanning resolution to compensate. E.g. to print out at 1.5 times
original size, multiply the scanning resolution by 1.5. Similary for
reducing images to keep file sizes down.

It only occurs with partitions of a volume, once you've used one all alises

Subject: freezes with 1,44 Mb discs
Working with PMac 8500,7600 and G3's I experienced odd behaviours with
MacOS 8 (even with earlier 7.6...).
The problem comes inserting 1,44 Mb HD floppy discs (even with 800Kb and
Windows 1,44 discs) in the disc driver. If the discs are not formatted the
MacOS locks the computer. To recover I have to restart the Mac with the
keyboard. On startup the Mac recognizes the unformatted disc, but it take a
while (maybe some minutes...).
I experienced another similar problem with formatted discs, containig data.
As soon as I insert the floppy, the computer freezes.
Does anybody experienced the same problems? Could this happens because of
PC Exchange or some other extension?

I too missed this feature of the CPU along with several others that I
lost when I updated to 7.5.5 a few months ago. A search for a freeware

KeyFinder came with Norton Utilities up through versions 2.0.x. It was
removed from version 3.0 and subsequent versions. It still works with OS
8.1 quite nicely when used correctly.
To use it with modern system software do the following:
(1) Copy the KeyFinder desk accessory suitcase to your hard drive. Do not
drop it on the System Folder.
(2) Double-click the suitcase and drag the desk accessory file contained
inside it out.
(3) Place the liberated desk accessory file in your Apple Menu Items

(4) Trash the not-quite-empty desk accessory suitcase.

There is an expensive solution--Sonar. There is a cheaper alternative:
UltraFind. I have tried Sonar and it is awkward and much less convenient
than On Locoation. I own UltraFind but have not yet tried indexing with
it. On Location is one reason I am still using 7.5.5 It is great.

The catalog retailers must send their files to the printer weeks in
advance of mailing, with content based upon what their suppliers tell
them regarding versions and delivery dates. It's a fact of life: software
slips, and catalog merchants sometimes fall off the tightrope that
stretches between promise and fulfillment. It's not their fault.
As for an HTML editor, I think Symantec Visual Page is superior to
anything in its class, including PageMill, Communicator's Composer
module, FrontPage, and Claris Home Page--it's fast and stable, it writes
clean code, it's almost actually WYSIWYG, and I can easily work around
its few limitations. I have not used GoLive CyberStudio, but then it
costs three times as much. The only problem with VP is that Symantec is
not presently planning to issue v.2 for the Mac.
BTW, I've seen the Wintel demo of PageMill 3.0, and IMHO it's not worth
the download on a T1. Adobe, in its rush to placate the PC market, has
fallen so far behind it may never catch up.

Subject: Q) keyboard selection of menu items
SpeedDoubler 8 works like the old Connectix Power Book Utilities and
permits keyboard selection of menu items. Alas, however, uunlike CPU it does
not give you full keyboard command of dialog boxes. Escapade, which is
very old, but still works at least through 7.6, helps with the dialog boxes,
although it can't compete with CPU.

Hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to measure the amount of time a folder
is open? For example: if I opened an Illustrator file is there any way
to time how long I was working on the specific file? Perhaps there is a
plug-in that does this? Any information would be most helpful.

I have a donated Mac IIci I am putting back into shape for a group I do
volunteer work for. It says it has 5 MB of RAM, and I have some surplus 1
MB SIMMs. I want to upgrade to 8 MB.
Is there a jumper that has to be moved to tell the Mac it has more memory?
Perhaps the SIMMs I thought were 1 MB are actually 256K. How can I tell?

Subject: RealAudio AGONY!
Hi folks,
I recently purchased and downloaded RealAudio 5.0 from their web site...
and I have a problem with the "PerfectPlay" feature.
Even though I have 48 megs of RAM and have assigned much of it to both my
web browser AND the RealPlayer program, when I choose to buffer the audio
up until the amount of available memory, NOTHING different happens! I get
unbearably jumpy audio! I have a reliable 33.6 connection... lots of
memory...and I don't use Virtual Memory or RAM Doubler.
so WHAT could be causing the problem??? Numerous emails to tech support
have so far been fruitless.... in fact, the first response they sent to me
consisted of instructions on how to use "PerfectPlay"!!!! i responded that
I KNOW how to use it, it just doesn't work...
has anyone else encountered this problem??
HELP!! If I don't solve this in a few more days, I'll certainly be seeking
a refund for the $30 I paid for RealAudio...
Thanks in advance,
David

Subject: Some tough questions on OS 8 disk cache memory settings.
Here's a couple of tough ones for ya:
What's the proper memory CP disk cache setting for a Powermac 7100/80,
with l2 cache, 72mb memory on board using Mac OS 8.0?
Books say 32k per meg, which is the default setting anyway. However,
technical persons say that due to a problem with modern memory manager,
cache setting should be no higher than 512k. I use Photoshop a lot and
was recommended to use lowest memory cache for system as possible, like
in the OS 7 days, with virtual memory off. I just turned on virtual
memory today to try it out, since I hear it's a lot more stable than in
the previous OS 7x and the programs use less memory and run smoother.
Am trying to resolve some freezes particularly in finder, opening
windows, copying files etc...also occasional sudden quits while in
desktop publishing program working on large files, even though extensive
memory is allotted to the programs. Plus the same exact bad modification
dates problem 9,6,6 on my hard drive's desktop that Norton's 3.5.2 Doctor
keeps finding and I fix, when I use it after the crashes or quits.
Have narrowed it down to recently installed MacLink Plus which includes
Easy Open (with it's over abundant desktop rebuilds) in order to work, or
not high enough disk cache setting in memory control panel, or both.
Since the books, manuals and technical people don't seem to agree on the
proper disk cache memory settings, it gets to be a bit confusing, even to
an experienced Mac user like myself. In the previous systems, it was said
that the disk cache can be raised to a level, where raising it higher,
will actually slow down the Mac. So I ran tests and fiddled with that
when running OS 7.5.5. 512K disk cache memory seemed to be the best for
my CPU for speed in the previous OS 7.5.5, with VM off. I also had less
memory on board then. Now in OS 8.0, it's said to raise the disk cache to
what ever, based on 32k of how much memory is installed and this will
speed up the Mac. Also to turn on virtual memory, which actually helps
the OS 8x run more stable.
Anyone out there up to date on this particular subject want to share the
info and unconfuse me? I'd prefer direct email. However you may want to
post the info to this list to unconfuse other people on this issue and
email me a copy.
TIA..

Martin Zibulsky

You might try trashing the PPC Registration Database file in your
Preferences folder. Microsoft uses this to keep track of what MS products
on available. If you ran something with the CD in or from the CD, the
database calls for the CD to be available. I had something similar when I
had a copy of Excel 5 on a ZIP disk and ran from it. Ever after, running
Excel 98 called for me to insert the ZIP disk. When I trashed the database
and launched an Office 98 product it rebuilt the database with no
reference to the ZIP disk.

You may need to update the CDR400's firmware - there's an update on
Yamaha's web site:
ftp://ftp.yamahayst.com/pub/CDR400_CDR200/MAC_upgrade/. I had the same
trouble using a CDR400 with my G3; applying the update fixed it. Thanks
to Ric Ford's excellent MacInTouch web site for this tip !

Subject: Zip drive failure, please help
Dear all,
all of sudden my Zip drive and all my cartridges are caput. The drive
itself is 2 years old. When I try to insert the cartridge into drive, there
is a noise of shtrang-shtrang-shtrang and so for some 5 min, then a message
comes out telling me that this disk is unreadable and do I want to
initialize it. I don't.
When I insert the next cartridge, it's OK, works fine until it's ejected
and attempt is made to insert it again - see above for results.
Eventually all my 7 cartridges went in this way. When I try to insert them
in friend's zip, the machine reports 'no message in drive'.
I really don't know what to do. In Bulgaria it turned out that there is no
after-warranty service of iomega zip drives and nobody has any clue.
PLEASE HELP.
Thank you really very much in advance.
Best regards,
Peter

Subject: {A} Flaky Internet Explorer
Regarding your Internet Explorer crashing constantly, you mention Epson
drinter drivers, so I'm assuming (I know!) that your problems may be
similar to the ones I was having. Great printers, poopy drivers.
I had great luck using the information at
Ted has a great site and searchable archives for problems, and even a
link on his main page for info about Internet Explorer problems.
I'm using Netscape 4.05 and was having the same Epson printer driver
madness that you appear to be having. The archives suggested this course
of action:
1. Have the browser boot to an actual page, not a blank page.
2. Unless you need your print spooler files on a different volume than
your startup disk, dump "Epson Launcher" altogether, which runs
automatically in the background all the time. Big contributor to this
problem. It's in your Extensions folder.
(I've done these two with remarkable success...now just Java kills me
once in a while with Type 2's. No startup dumps, and no mid-surf dumps
unless Java is involved)
3. A third possible help is on the Epson UK website. One reader posted
that the new Epson 850 printer drivers are available there (5.01? 5.05?)
and they appear to work okay with the Epson 800, my printer. I downloaded
them, but have yet to install them, since the first two things on my list
seemed to solve my problem. To get them, go to and
select Europe, then select the U.K. then find the driver archive. Dunno
why these are not in the US Espon website ::shrug::
I hope this helps!!
