They don't say what Netscape 4.0.X for Mac supports 128 bit. Each Netscape version comes in both 40bit & 128bit (last I checked, month ago, 4.5 was not yet available in 128bit). The key is that you cannot download the 128bit version unless the download system verifies that your IP number is in the US. That all has to do with export controls. -----|----- 0-0 (_)+ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Sep 1998 21:09:52 -0700 From: bc979@lafn.org (Doug Hardie) Subject: (A) Security on Netscape 4.0.6 decreased from 4.0.5 > One would think the newer version of Netscape is more secure than the older version. > Actually the opposite appears true. Is this true? How much less secure is 40bit encryption > versus 128bit encryption? There are two versions of Netscape - the US version and the international version. The international version is restricted in its encryption/decryption capabilities. One of those is the key size. There are others. I don't have the details, but some algorithms are restricted to the US only. It appears that the 4.1.5 is a US version and the 4.0.6 is the international version. -- Doug ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Sep 98 13:21:00 BST From: Neil Edwards-OUPC Subject: (Q) FTP with Finder like interface a brodey wrote: >Now if there was an FTP program that used the Finder interface to drag and >drop files to and from the FTP server the same as can be done on AppleTalk, >that showed dates modified file sizes, and full file names, as well as an >ditable path field (like Internet Explorer for the PC, and file renaming in >the style of the Finder, as well as a dialog box reporting how much data has >been sent/received, and how much is left to be sent and received, I would >get it. Michael Camp wrote: >Why Apple cannot provide information on its own extensions, at least, >beats me! The problem, at least with Apple's own files, is that there is no "mandate" on providing file info. Extensions Manager does not actually keep track of the info; it gets it from a resource within each file. The author (or development team) of each file is supposed to put a short description of that file within the aforementioned resource. But they don't, and Apple's policies don't make sure it happens. >Of course the information is available from other sources like >"Extension Overload" or "InformInit", but is there any way to update (or >edit) the information appearing in Extensions Manager? Unfortunately, the only way to do it is to go into each file with ResEdit and add/modify the appropriate resource with the proper info. Doable? Yes. Would you want to? Probably not... I don't know about a client that has bigger icons, but I am quite familiar with NetPresenz and Fetch, and both have editable paths. In Fetch, you just type the server in the top line, and in the "directory" line, type the path you want, when setting up a connection. My concern is all the Type 1 errors you report. I suspect that much of your problem is coming from your computer setup, not from the clients you are trying. I use Fetch all the time, both on the internet and on a LAN at work. I use it when dialed in to our home office to Unix and Windows machines. I use it to connect to Windows machines at work set up as ftp servers. I use it to transfer files to and from Unix machines. This is all done on a 6100/66 and has worked from System 7.5.1 through 8.1. We use it at home on an 8500, a 6115 and an 8100 and has worked from System 7.1 through System 8.1 on the internet, and even, as an experiment, on local connections between machines. The 6100 at work is set up 10 hours a day as an ftp server using NetPresenz and serves files dependably to Windows and Unix machines. I have never had a Type 1 error since I started using it on any of these machines. In fact, it has never failed in any way on any of the machines, except lost connections once in awhile back before we got cable modem. All this is just to say that you might be due for a System cleanup and a check of your modem or other internet connection. You are talking about very stable software and should not be having these errors. First it happened to one drive, and then the other about 2 weeks later. When I go to the "get info" window for each drive, I can copy the generic looking icon and paste it somewhere else. When I attempt to cut the generic looking icon or attempt to paste a different icon on to the folder, I get the following message: "The command could not be completed because it cannot be found." Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is and how to fix it. I've had a few "interesting" experiences recently. The current released version of TechTool Pro is 2.0.3r1. There should be an updater somewhere at . If that doesn't help, contact and they _may_ tell you how to download the latest beta version of 2.0.3r2. My experience with a few of these beta versions has been mostly positive (but don't try the new disk optimization features until everything else looks OK). Now, about your experience with Disk First Aid. Are you booting & running it from the OS 8.1 Disk Tools floppy disk or another external drive? Are you using the latest version (8.2)? If not, Try it. It may help. Apparantly there are both 128 bit and 40 bit encryption versions of Netscape 4.0.6. I had unknowingly only downloaded the 40bit when it was first released, hence the surprise I got from my bank when it stated Netscape's encryption was too retarded on its web page. 128 bit encryption is not available outside the U.S. for those who are and are wondering about it. I also hear no startup chord when I startup and I also have a monitor with speakers with the sound routed to the monitor (I have the 750AV monitor connected to my 8600/300). So maybe it's related to that. The startup chord should come up right when you start up your mac. At the same time, the monitor needs some time to start up and I wouldn't be surprised if the speakers don't function at all for the first few seconds the monitor starts up, so maybe that's why we don't hear the chord. Also, sometimes when I restart my computer (so the monitor is already on) I hear an extremely short chord which stops right away when the monitor becomes black. I'll try this at home tonight; I'll simply unhook the sound-out from the monitor and let the Mac's internal speakers do the job.
