Subject: [*] Purge OSL 1.0.4
This script checks for the presence of the ObjectSupportLib library
(OSL) in the Extensions folder of any disk. Under Mac OS 8 or newer, it
provides the option to remove it. Under System 7.x, it warns of the
absence of OSL, or the presence of an obsolete version. The script was
written to deal with the fact that many software installer packages
install OSL even though it should not be present under Mac OS 8 or newer
(because a more recent version of OSL is already in the System file),
and also to deal with the fact that many packages install older,
defective versions of OSL over the most recent version.
Purge OSL requires AppleScript, the scriptable Finder and the standard
Apple Choose File and Display Dialog scripting additions. Earlier
versions of Purge OSL have been tested with AppleScript 1.1 and System
7.6 and AppleScript 1.1.2 and Mac OS 8.0. Version 1.0.4 has been tested
with AppleScript 1.1.2 and Mac OS 8.1, and it is believed that it will
compile and run under earlier versions.
Version 1.0.4 now works correctly with OS 8.1

Subject: [*] SoftwareFPU 3.04
SoftwareFPU is a Macintosh utility which allows applications requiring
a Floating Point Unit (FPU) to work on computers without one, such as the
IIsi, IIvi, LC series, Classic II & Color Classic series, Performa series,
Power Macintosh, and some models of PowerBook, PowerBook Duo, and Quadra
series. Put the SoftwareFPU control panel in your Control Panels folder
and restart and FPU applications that formerly crashed will begin working.
SoftwareFPU requires a 68020, 68030, 68LC040, or PowerPC processor.
SoftwareFPU is fully System 7.5 compatible.
The shareware 68K-only version of SoftwareFPU is available on America
Online (keyword MUT), CompuServe (GO MACSYS), via anonymous ftp
(ftp.jna.com), from our Web site (http://www.jna.com) or from Macintosh
User's Groups around the world. If you use shareware SoftwareFPU you must
register with John Neil & Associates. The shareware version will work on
Power Macintosh computers but is not PowerPC-native. A commercial
68K/PowerPC version with twice the performance on Power Macintoshes can be
obtained by registering with John Neil & Associates. Current registered
68K-only users can upgrade to the 68K/PowerPC version for $10.
To register, send a check, money order, credit card, or purchase order
to John Neil & Associates, P.O. Box 2156, Cupertino, CA 95015. The
registration fee for the shareware 68K-only version of SoftwareFPU is just
$10. To receive the "fat" 68K/PowerPC version with twice the performance
on Power Macintoshes, send $20. You can register on-line using CompuServe
(GO SWREG), or by calling (800) 663-2943, or by fax at (415) 661-2944, or
by e-mail at sales@jna.com. All registered users will receive a special
registered version of SoftwareFPU in the mail that allows the startup
"thank you" balloon to be hidden. Sorry, the registered version cannot be
delivered by e-mail, but overnight delivery is available.
Registration information and a registration form are available at the
end of the "About SoftwareFPU" document or by clicking the "Plea" button in
the SoftwareFPU control panel.
[Note to the moderators: SoftwareFPU may be included on a commercially
available CD-ROM of the archives]

Subject: [*] StartOnce 1.1
Introducing StartOnce version 1.1 .
(Shareware 10$US or 5 pounds UK.)
StartOnce helps you to control your Startup Items.
When you start your Mac for the first time on any day, StartOnce
will launch any items found in the "StartOnce Items" folder. On
subsequent restarts, these items will be skipped.
Installation is easy as StartOnce will create the "StartOnce Items"
folder for you the first time it is run. All you have to do is to
decide which items you want launched once a day and place aliases to
them in this folder. Put an alias to StartOnce in your "Startup Items"
folder and you are ready to rock-and-roll.
Use it whenever you want to do something only once a day. I use
StartOnce on my Mac, in combination with Roland Gustafsson's
free (ThankYouWare) 'SimpleBackup' utility to make a copy of my
most important files at the start of work each day. If I should
happen to corrupt one of these files, I know that I can always
revert to the backup copy.
This new version updates the documentation with my new email address and
web site:-
email: s7j7smith@aol.com
WWW: http://members.aol.com/s7j7smith/index.html
This program requires System 7 to run.
Please include this on CD collections if you wish.
Best Regards,
Steve Smith

Subject: Desktop Trackpad with a Ctrl-Click Right Mouse button
Anyone aware of a trackpad with the right mouse button able to Trigger the
Apple Data Detectors? Anyone want to write a patch for the Alps Glidepoint
so that one can assign Ctrl-click to the right mouse key? I think it would
make for a good piece of shareware.
I have the Alps Glidepoint for my desktop Mac 7100AV and I love it! Taped
it to my wrist rest right below the standard keyboard so that using it is
like using my powerbook. Alps driver software allows you to assign most
anything to the buttons (one above and two below) *but* it does not allow
you to asign a Ctrl-Click. What with Apple Data Detectors, a two buton
mouse could be quite valuable.

Subject: Hooking up single desktop Mac to ISDN
I have a single Umax Apus 3000 on which I'd like to install an ISDN adapter
for accessing my ISP and favourite service bureaux.
Ideally I'd prefer an internal PCI card to an external adapter connected
via the serial port, but fear these could be outside my price range.
All the mail order catalogues I've seen don't appear to offer much clarity
on this aspect, so before I take the plunge I'd be very grateful for any
advice from colleagues in the UK regarding the most suitable
product/supplier.
Many thanks in advance,
Chris Reed
