Hello,
I have a new Newton 2100. I am looking for a dictionary (not a
spell-checker, but a real dictionary with definitions) for it. I think I
want something on a card, though if I understand correctly, I could
download a dictionary onto a memory card bought separately (? correct me if
I'm wrong, please!).
Can anyone recommend a particular dictionary, or a source of Newton
books, on cards, or not?

In Apple's quest for Mac OS 8.x stability, they pretty much eliminated
all of the cool Easter Eggs that previous system software versions had. I
thought they had taken out the Breakout game a while back...

Subject: (Q) Epson 800 or 1520 or Something Else
I've been using an Epson SC800 for awhile and I like the output a lot,
although the driver can be cranky. I make images from PhotoShop or Enhance
or Illustrator on the order of 100-125 megs, but not professionally and not
under any production deadlines. Recently, I have wanted to be able to make
bigger images, like 11x14, so I have been considering getting an Epson 1520.
I'd appreciate the collective wisdom of the community in this decision. I
once read about banding problems on the 1520. I also understand that the
Photo model will print larger than 8.5x11. Is the six-color ink a better
way to go, or are the ink cartridge costs prohibitively higher than for the
800/1520?
All insights and experiences appreciated.
TIA

Subject: [Q] mystery file sysKas.5957
I would like to know if someone has heard anything about an invisible file
named
sysKas.5957
It shows up in the System Folder of the IDE disk from a PPC 4400/200 and
seems to be created at shutdown.
The file type is TEXT, the creator is Anon, and the size is small (688
bytes); it does not contain any resource, only some gibberish text.
The IDE disk is a 2 Gb partitioned in two equal parts with FWB HDT 2.5, and
the machine is running system 8.1.
Thank you in advance for any help

Subject: [Q] Selecting startup disk at restart?
I have a PowerMac 6100/66 with System 7.6.1, but that may be irrelevant.
Is there a way to select the startup disk at restart using a key combination
or similar? I know that Command-Option-Shift-Delete will bypass the internal
hard drive, but I'm looking to switch to the RAM disk (with a copy of a
minimal system) after a crash, but this is not picked up.
I also have a non-Apple hard disk on the SCSI bus, but this is not detected
until after the system is loaded.
Any suggestions?

Hi,
We have an AppleShare server here (IP 5.0.2) at our department,
running MacOS 8.0.
Now, is it OK to install the ARA-Server (version 2.1) on that
server, so that users can make modem-connections to it ?

Subject: Experience with Word 98
Microsoft Word 98 is very clever at helping users of older versions
of word to move their customization (menus, keyboard commands,
macros, etc.) from older versions of Word. This facility did,
however, cause a problem for me. When I installed Word 98 the first
time, the customization was not working at all. After some thinking I
found out the cause and what to do about it.
The cause was that I had more than one "Normal Template" from Word 6
in different folders. Only one of them was the one I was really
using, the other ones were old backups. The Normal Template is where
Word stores its customization information. Apparently, Word 98 found
the wrong Normal Template and thus did not customize correctly.
To avoid this problem, I did the following:
(1) Uninstalled Word 98
(2) Searched for all files with the file name "Normal", the file type
"WTBN" (= Word Template) and the creator "MSWD"
(3) Deleted all but the right one
(4) Emptied trashed
(5) Installed Word 98 again
This solved this problem for me.

I'd love for this to be the case, but unfortunately, there's no way to
force authors to use this form when contributing. And it would take too
much work for the moderators to fix it all, is my guess.

Personally I don't mind this so much, provided the programs
aren't cripple-ware. I can try them out, pay for them when
I can and sling them if I don't like them. What gets up *my*
nose are those unusable demos of commercial programs that
get posted, with some essential piece of functionality (like
the ability to save) disabled.

Hey folks,
While playing with QuickTime 3.0, for some reason I was reminded at the
software company Omega's attempt to create an alternate OS for ALL Macs.
Does anyone know if they're still working on it, or did they fold?
thanks in advance,

"PictPocket 1.3.2" must be what you want.
It captures "vector" picture into the clipboard.
You can find it on the nearest info-mac mirror.

Subject: Small Networks
Dear Info-Mac,
I work for a small charity here in Mozambique where about 10 Macs are
networked using Appleshare.
One PC is connected to a modem and we use Eudora Light sitting on top of
UUCP to access the internet. In Mozambique (although some do have it) it is
not generally possible to access the web, or stay on line. You can only
dial up and send and receive email.
I would like a system whereby all network users can send messages to one
terminal using different names, user1@concern.uem.mz, user2@concern.uem.mz
and so on. When mail is received it goes to their copy of Eudora (or
whatever) on their terminal.
Only one PC would actually dial up and receive and send the messages.
This would free up the one PC with Email and also give some privacy.
I have tried using aliases and even once experimented with resedit (on a
tip posted here) but to no avail.
Any advice would be most welcome

We use MAS90 here - it runs on an AIX RS/6000 box and all of the Macs use
a simple Telnet session. however, I would be careful before you invest in
this, apparently State Of the Art (the company that makes Mas90) is
gradually phasing out the terminal based system in favor of a Wintel
Client Server based system.
I seem to remember quite a while ago Great Plains Software had an
accounting system that ran on a Mac - I don't know how powerful it was,
or whatnot, but it might still be a possibility.

I'm no accountant by any stretch of the imagination but I have been helping
a missionary group that is a Mac shop and they use Quick Books by Intuit. I
understand they are quite satisfied with it.

Subject: ZIP Problem
The ZIP saga continues.
I got the replacement ZIP internal drive for my 7300 today from Club Mac.
The ZIP Tools disk only showed the DOS partition. Again. But at least
the drive would accept a disk.
I played around. Same game with all but OS 8.1 extensions disabled. To
make a long story shorter, turning off PC Exchange (2.2) was the only
way to see the Mac partition if Iomega's CP and Extension were active.
I trashed everything Iomega and restarted. Gee, there's the Mac install
partition. OK, installed (This time it was the 5.4 version). Restarted
afterwards, and the Tools disk again showed only the DOS partition. Oh
bother! Had to turn off PC Exchange again to see the Mac side.
Went to Iomega's web site in the fond hope of being able to pursue the
problem. Wrong. They offer answering questions only by phone, and only
if I'm willing to cough up $20 to do so. Uh thanks, no.
As I said the other evening, this doesn't happen on Leslye's PowerTower.
Only on my 7300. Both systems running OS of the 8.1 persuasion.
Have any of y'all seen this oddity? Better, have you found a fix?
