Subject: [*] CoolViews 1.1J - Japanese Version
This is the Japanese version of the CoolViews package.
WHAT IS COOLVIEWS?
CoolViews is a utility that adds functionality and visual enhancements to
the MacOS 8 Finder. With CoolViews installed, you can reorder and resize
columns in Finder window list views, get rid of shaded sort columns and row
separators, set global list view preferences, override the date and time
formatting used by the Finder, and even enable "secret" columns.
MACOS 8 IS GREAT. AND WITH COOLVIEWS, IT'S BETTER THAN EVER!
Every preference in CoolViews is customizable. You can use as much or as
little of its functionality as you need: from the simplest enhancement to a
complete overhaul of the Finder's windows. If you want to shorten the date
used in Finder list views, decrease the column widths, and eliminate the
lines separating rows, you can do that. If you want to completely override
folder-specific list view preferences, use funky background colors in your
windows, and add columns showing the creator and type of every file, you can
do that too!
Versions of CoolViews are available for both PowerMacs and 680x0 Macs, and
in Japanese as well as English. CoolViews is compatible with MacOS 8.1 and
works with other appearance-modifying utilities like Kaleidoscope.
WHAT'S NEW IN VERSION 1.1
CoolViews 1.1 introduces a number of changes that make it even cooler than
before. Much of the interface has been redesigned. For example, CoolViews
now includes a "mock" Finder window that allows you to visually modify the
columns in Finder list views. The most significant new feature is the
ability to reorder columns. You can also now resize (and reorder) columns
without globally overriding column visibility. Also, in addition to removing
the separators between rows in Finder window list views, you can now choose
to colorize the separators instead. We recommend that all CoolViews users
upgrade to version 1.1.

Subject: [*] Flight/Math Utility -- FlightMath 1.0
Before any flight, a certain amount of math is always necessary. Most
pilots don't want to manually go through the complex math involved (Try
using imaginary numbers to solve a wind correction problem!), and the usual
alternative is the cumbersome E6B Flight Computer. However, this is nothing
more than a circular slide rule. Surely there is a better way to perform
these calculations.
Yes, you guessed it, there is now! FlightMath handles routine calculations
like wind correction, speed and distance, fuel consumption, and temperature
problems with ease. With the user-friendly Macintosh interface, these
calculations take just a fraction of the time they take with conventional
means.

INSTANT PLAYER is a program which allows you to browse your soundfiles from the
Finder. Start up INSTANT PLAYER, go back to the Finder, select a soundfile and
press the option key. One can browse a large number of soundfiles by just
holding
down the option key and clicking on the sounds. This makes it great for looking
through sound f/x or sample libraries. It will play the soundfile as soon as it
opens it, so is also good as a browser helper application or as a drag and drop
player.
REQUIREMENTS
INSTANT PLAYER uses AppleEvents to ask the Finder which file is selected.
Thus,
it needs System 7.5.1, AppleScript, the Finder Scripting Extension,
ObjectSupportLib and Sound Manager 3.1 to run.

Subject: [*] Sleeper D-3.0.2 - German version of Sleeper
Sleeper is a control panel for desktop Macintoshes that spins down the hard
disk, dims the screen, and powers off Energy Star compliant monitors after
periods of inactivity. This reduces power consumption and quiets a Mac when
it is not in use. Sleeper can also password-protect the screen and shut
down a Mac if it has been idle for too long. Separate sleep times can be
set for all features, and a hotkey can be used to put the Macintosh to
sleep on demand.
Unlike Apple's Energy Saver control panel, Sleeper does not require that a
Macintosh have built-in power management capabilities, so Sleeper will
support any model from the MacPlus to the latest PowerMacs. By not relying
on Apple's Power Manager, Sleeper can also provide more options and more
precise control, and does not suffer from the unreliability some users
experience with Apple's Energy Saver control panel.
Sleeper requires only 50K of RAM to provide all its capabilities. These
features include:
- Hard disk sleep
- Energy Star monitor support
- Password screen locking
- A very frugal screen saver
- Timed shutdown
- Configurable hotkey options
- Support for the Sleep command in the Finder's Special menu
- Kaleidoscope and Mac OS 8.1 compatibility
- PowerMac-native support for both IDE and SCSI disks
- Support for multiple SCSI buses
- Full SCSI Manager 4.3 compliance
- Balloon help
Sleeper will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher, including
Mac OS 8.1, and is accelerated for PowerPC. In addition to the standard
internet archives, information and updates are available at:
Sleeper may be included on the UMich and Info-Mac CD-ROMs.
What's New
----------
Sleeper 3.0.2 includes the following improvements:
- Additional controls to turn warning sounds on and off for monitor
power-up and automatic shutdown.
- Enhancements to the Sleeper Strip control strip module to allow users
to temporarily turn off Sleeper, invoke sleep features separately, and

Subject: (A) OS8.1 freezing on startup
PROBLEM: Since upgrading to 8.1 from 8.0 a couple of weeks ago I am
suffering freezes on startup. I do not recall making any changes that may
have caused this. ... Symptom details - computer freezing after all
extensions loaded but before the desktop icons are drawn. Its random,
sometimes happens - sometimes not - but its been happening a lot lately -
and I'm getting sick of it.
SUGGESTION: You did not mention if you achieve successful successive
startups with all extensions off (shift key down during boot). If you
succeed that is a sure indication of a conflict with installed system items.
Try the no extension boot and afterwards delete the Finder Preferences and
replace your Finder file. If you restart successfully lock the Finder and
Finder Preferences. Next I would suggest you zap the parameter ram (PRAM)
using Cmd-Opt-P-R from a cold start. Finally, use an extension manager to
test for conflicts with installed extensions, control panels, etc.
LAST RESORT: Backup the hard drive of your computer. Restart with a system
CD and reformat your drive and install a clean version of the system. Now
install your own software one by one, testing by restarting after each
installation of your software to identify the offending items. One way to
quickly identify newly installed items is to use File Buddy's
(http://www.skytag.com) create inventory and compare inventory features.

Subject: Compatible Schedule and Email Pgms?
I'm one of the very few Mac folks in a mostly Win95/WinNT company. Running a
Quadra 630 (68040) as my day-to-day machine, OS 8.1, connected to NT LAN using
DAVE TCP/IP (terrific program!). Using MS-Outlook Express 4.0 for mail,
Netscape 4.04 for browser, and Claris Organizer (demo) for contacts and
schedules. Main problems are (1) company is using Schedule+ v7.5 for
calendars. I'm having almost no luck interfacing with it; (2) want to migrate
off Outlook Express to something more robust for email (Eudora Pro 4.0?); (3)
want to have a contacts manager which interfaces with my email program so that
I only have to enter an email address once, and from then on the mail program
will "pull" the address from the contacts manager. I have almost 700 names in
my contacts database so updating each one 2 or 3 times in different programs
is a non-starter. Request recommendations for email/contact mgmt programs
which will interface to meet objectives (2) and (3), and if it will allow me
to interface with Schedule+ that's even better. Failing that, maybe publish my
schedule as an HTML page which I can put on a web server for my colleagues?

The 8100 is running OS8.0. The G3 is running 8.1. I have never seen this

This does indeed sound like an extension conflict. Even though you didn't
add any new extensions, it's perfectly possible that you have an
extension that is compatible with Mac OS 8.0 and not with 8.1.
You can use your Extensions Manager control panel to narrow it down. To
start with, choose "Mac OS 8.1 all" as the "Selected Set" and restart. If
it works okay, turn on your other extensions (one or two at a time) and
restart until it stops working -- then you'll know what's causing the
problem.
If it doesn't work with "Mac OS 8.1 all", try "Mac OS 8.1 base". If that
doesn't work, turn off the non-essential parts of that one, such as
Desktop Pictures, and see if it works.
You also may wish to use a program like Conflict Catcher to automate this
process -- it knows what's essential and what isn't, and can check for
multiple conflicts. A free trial copy of Conflict Catcher is available
from:
http://www.casadyg.com/products/conflictcatcher/
>I cant understand why the Finder and preferences are sooooo fragile.
Well, all software is fragile and fails to work if it's damaged. If an
extension is damaging the Finder, it's not really Apple's fault. Apple
wanted to eliminate extensions entirely with Copland to prevent this kind
of problem, but many people like the flexibility of extensions more than
guaranteed stability.

Subject: Slow connect (Windows better?)
Hi folks,
I'm using a PowerBook 1400cs with a 33.6 Megahertz modem, and I currently
use MS Internet Explorer 4. I've noticed that my connect speed doesn't seem
to be as fast as it should be.
Is there a program available which would show my connect speed? The program
which dials-up for me, "Apple Internet Status" doesn't give this
information.
And why is it that even after a web page has completely loaded, when I
scroll through it, the browser window is VERY slow to update, in a very
jerky manner?
When I browse the web on a much slower Windows based machine at my job, web
pages scroll very smoothly, yet my machine scrolls web pages very
annoyingly slow, even after they've fully loaded.
My machine has 48 megs of RAM, and I've devoted 7 megs of RAM
to Internet Explorer. I've tried adding even more, but it doesn't seem
to speed things up. I also use Ram Doubler 2, and Speed Doubler 8.
Help!!!
Thanks in advance for some information.
