Results are logged. What action to (automatically) take when a disk problem is found is 100% customizable! The idea is "damage prevention" - disk errors can go unnoticed, resulting in even more errors until finally things go really wrong. Checking your disks on a regular basis is just good "disk-keeping". Disk Watcher automates that for you. Use: The Disk Watcher installer will put everything in place. It gives you the option to have Disk Watcher launched on every startup, or just once per day at startup. Alternatively you can have a cron launch it at whatever interval you deem appropriate. - Disk Watcher allows you to exempt disks from being checked based on the kind of disk (locked, ejectable) and/or based on the disk's name. - Disk Watcher allows you to have your own custom actions take place (which can even overrule Disk Watcher's default action) when a disk problem is found. Such an action might be to automatically launch another disk repair utility, but may also be to launch your own home grown scripts... Powerful stuff! System Requirements: - Works under Mac OS 7.5 through 9.2.1 - Disk First Aid 8.2 or higher - AppleScript needs to be enabled History: - 1.0.3 - Fixed a problem with large, full disks - 1.0.2 - Fixed a few small bugs and included latest version of "The Dailies" - 1.0.1 - First public release Pricing and payment: Disk Watcher is $10,- non-crippled shareware with a free 30-day trial period. Payment is handled by Kagi. Baker is an OS X utility used to simplify the task of downloading files from Usenet newsgroups. New in this release is the Persistent Article Queues. Baker documents now remember all the articles you have selected in all the newsgroups and on all the news servers you access. This lets you build queues for as many newsgroups as you like without having to worry about losing all your hard work because of something that disrupts your downloading activities. After you download the newsgroup overview, simply use the Queue Articles window to select the files you want to download. Then, the next time you click the Start button, Baker will automatically begin downloading the files. Baker 1.1 is a free upgrade to current owners. Unregistered versions of the $35 program are fully functional but will occasionally display reminders to register. It produces a text file on your desktop containing a formatted, recursive list of the files and folder= s within the folder selected. Invisible files and folders are clearly labelled. Files are listed with their creator/file types and size. File names with trailing return characters (such as "Icon\r") are marked with "=AC". Apologia: This is one of the first programs anyone who learns the Mac toolbox will write. I've written it myself at least three times, over the years, counting this one. Now that the "Classic" environment is dying out (slooooowly...) I just wanted to have it around, in my bag of tricks. I don't actually USE it often, but when I do, it's probably either to create an inventory of files, or to search for odd stuff hiding on my system (like Internet Explorer's invisible "Date Preferences", as in how kinky you prefer your internet content, not whether you want DAY-MONTH-YEAR dates). Folder Lister can list about 25,000 files & folders (4 Gb) in about 90 seconds, on this iBook 2000 at least. Requires PowerPC, Macintosh OS 7.5 or better, OS 9.2.1 recommended. Freeware. Folder Flattener Lite will compress and encipher your folder and all files and subfolders within, creating a backup file suitable for uploading to Internet storage servers. Double-clicking the .=FEat file will restore the entire folder to the location you select. Does not delete sources unless the Option key is depressed (normally, a pretty cheerful key.) Small, stable, fast, secure. Requires PowerPC, Macintosh OS 7.5 up to 9.2.1. I have not tested in the Mac OS X "Classic" environment yet. Freeware. Some assembly required (your codebook, see below). Absolutely no support. If you lose track of your codebook, or if it is damaged, your .at files will be beyond my resources to restore. History: v1.1 - 6 Dec 2001, allow Folder Flattener to delete original files if Optio= n key is held down; also, a cosmetic bug fix. Unencrypted the Ciph.at archive (sorry). v1.0 - 2 Dec 2001, first release Discussion: Compression by zlib 1.1.3. 'Nuff said. By default, the codebook option is turned off. If you turn it on: You will need to select a codebook, instead of a password. Any large compressed file greater than 5 Mb in size will do. You may put an alias to your codebook in Folder Flattener's own folder, eliminating the need for further attention. Encryption is provided by an elementary stream cipher which is difficult for me to assess with any degree of confidence. Because of the large state space, balanced by the unsophisticated 1-byte encryption (this is the entire bitsmear algorithm: XOR), I think the cipher may be about as secure as DES, if that. It's a bit more than kid sister proof, certainly. In any case, Folder Flattener Lite does NOT incorporate or use strong encryption code such as Rijndael, Serpent or TwoFish. The full version of Folder Flattener DOES incorporate Brian Gladman's Rijndael code, but after the events of 9/11, there is no way I could justify releasing a tool that sharp-edged. Source for the stream cipher is included. ********** ABSTRACT CROPPED ********** [Archived as /info-mac/cmp/folder-flattener-11.hqx; 526 K] ------------------------------ Date: 7 Dec 2001 From: Tiger Technologies To: Subject: [*] Holiday Lights 5.2 This is the English version of the shareware Holiday Lights screen saver and desktop application for Macintosh. I "upgraded" from Netscape 4.x to Netscape 6, and I'm less than thrilled with the results. I've also tried the latest Mozilla; ditto. I would like to downgrade again. The problem is that my user profile is now a Netscape 6 profile. I would like to translate it back into a Netscape 4 profile. Does anybody know how to do this? Alternatively, is there some way to have Eudora or Outlook Express (etc.) import a Netscape 6 mail setup? to have Internet Explorer or Opera (etc.) import Netscape 6 bookmarks, cookies, and the like?
