Internet Explorer 4.5 or earlier and Netscape versions earlier than 4.0.5 for the Mac both have outdated security certificates installed together with the new ones. Even if you apply the 128bit patch. It's easy enough to edit the certificates and get info on them in your web browser's preferences, but many people don't know they should do that by the end of the year for many certificates. A lot of websites will be inaccessible if those certificates expire then. So do view your certificates, and delete any that will expire soon, or have already expired. It will mean less aggravation later on with statements saying the certificate has expired. Hope this helps. Has anyone found a solution that will let me travel and print from my G3 (no USB port) without spending an extra $100 for that special cable and its software? I'm thinking about the Canon BJC-80 (kind of pricey at $300 but certainly compact) but as far as I can tell I would have to pay a $100 extra fee for having a Mac, as it seems no manufacturer has bothered to make a portable printer for Macs. Any ideas? ___________________________________________________________ Rich Garella - rich@garella.com - New York http://www.garella.com/rich (for job-related or urgent weekday e-mail: rgarella@bridge.com) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Dec 1999 23:47:30 -0500 From: Tom Fortmann Subject: (Q) Saving Remote Access configurations Whenever I upgrade the OS, all my Remote Access and TCP/IP configurations disappear. The result is that when you attempt to re-connect, the request fails because the operating system reports to your application that the serial channel is already in use. Of course, this is not so. In some cases, it is required that you reboot the computer to alleviate this situation. That is, until now. Launch ResetSerialChannel, select the serial channel you wish to reset, click on the reset button and the channel is 'closed'. If an error is encountered, the number of the error is reported in the messages area. If the channel was already closed, this is reported to you which may seem like useless information, but it can be a clue to the fact that, perhaps, there is something else wrong with your setup such as a cable connection, power to your modem, etc. As noted in the instructions, if you were connected via Apple Remote Access, PPP or some other connection intermediary, you should tell that software to 'Disconnect'. Do this as you would normally do when finished with your connection. Comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please eMail lance@drake.org ---------------------------------------------------- Due to time and legal considerations, technical questions concerning serial connections, modems, etc. cannot be entertained. Only tested with System 7.5 on an LC475. Abstract ======== SSIParser is a quick and dirty application to help web developers who use Server Side Includes on their web site. It enables you to test your pages before uploading them to the web server, by parsing the special SSI instructions in the file and generating a new file representing what the server would actually send to the client. As far as I know, this is the only freeware program available for the Mac OS that will do this. I wrote it for my own use, so it is not a polished product, although it is straightforward to use. There is no guarantee that the behaviour will be exactly the same as obtained on your web server, but it is a useful preliminary check before uploading. Use at your own risk. I hope you find it useful. Ian Goldby [Archived as /info-mac/comm/inet/web/ssi-parser.hqx; 20 K] ------------------------------ Date: 13 Dec 1999 From: royerm Subject: [*] Tribute to W. This package includes HyperTADS 1.1.3, which is an HTML TADS interpreter for the Macintosh based on HTML TADS 2.5.1. It should be everything you need to play the game. If HyperTADS doesn't suit you, there are other TADS interpreters for the Macintosh. Check the TADS Page at http://www.tela.bc.ca/tela/tads/ for advice on how to obtain and install the right interpreter for your system. If you are not using HTML TADS or HyperTADS, you should set your display to use a fixed-width font if you can. Otherwise, formatting will look odd in a few places. If Interactive Fiction is a new thing to you, or you just want to refresh your memory, you can get some general playing instructions within the game by typing INSTRUCTIONS. Specific information on Worlds Apart is available by typing ABOUT, and hints are available via the HINT command. This work is copyrighted freeware. The game package may be distributed on all public archives. Again, the Worlds Apart homepage is located at http://www.igs.net/~tril/worlds/. They also come with active terminators included. Well, they work, are well built, deliver the goods and I think with a bit more written material included will give any other company a run for its money ( it had NO data sheet or instructions so for novices it would be a bit of a problem). You only need to run Apple Disk utilities to install drivers and it is off and running. I noted when looking within that the circuits seem to allow one to install other hard drives within it if in the future you had a larger or faster drive available of the IDE/66 variety. It has what I think to be a standard IDE cable connecting the drive to the internal scsi interface card. By the way, the power supply is a highly shielded module and the fan is reasonably quiet. The whole unit runs like a Mercedes in both versions that I have. You can barely hear the drive accessing data. One of the units is a Quantum and the other an IBM and both are 7200 rpm units. The great thing was the incredible pricing which was half of the scsi competition! For example the 34.2 gig IBM external in a metal case was under 700 USD! Really. I have nothing to do with the company but took a gamble that paid off for me big time. They are at makamisystems.com. If anyone else knows about their products or has experience with their burners, players, readers and drives let me know. I have had conversations with their people and they are very helpful and willing to please. It is just right for Mac folks though they make units for the Dark Side also. I had many replies, a number saying that there has been a recorded known problem with the drives on PowerComputing machines probably caused by the powerful fans within. One said that a CD cleaner might improve the CD's performance. You can buy them from record stores and Computer outlets. I am happy to report that it has done the trick for me: disks that wouldn't open now do so with an overall faster icon appearance on the screen. I recommend that any who experience CD drive reading problems get a cleaning device before doing anything else. Hope this message is helpful.
