When the Assimilator program is run on a lab Macintosh it will mount an AppleShare file server and then make the harddisk look more or less exactly like a pre-specified source folder on the server. It does this by throwing away (into the Trash) any files or folders that don't belong or are different and downloading any missing files. Icon positions, folder views, finder flags and so forth are all corrected on the client Macintosh to match the source folder. Although it is designed for student lab situations, it might also be useful in other circumstances, such as for setting up newly purchased Macs or in testing or demo labs. Changes since 1.1 include: * Open Transport IP address, and PCI ethernet address compatibility. * You can set a folder to be downloaded only if the destination folder is missing. * Interoperability with MacPrefect and MacAdministrator. * Various bug fixes and enhancements. Assimilator requires System 7 and a harddisk and is $10 shareware. Version 1.1 is a free upgrade to registered users who registered after 1 Jan 1996. (It's only 17K, plus a sample Reminders text file and a manual.) It works for me, which has made me the envy of all my friends and relatives. By setting reminders 10 or so days ahead, I find I'm as on the ball as the best of the rest of my friends and relatives in remembering to buy cards and presents (and to actually send them)--and way ahead of the date-impaired. Birthdays and Such runs on almost every Macintosh computer that's been made since 1986 -- Mac Plus through the latest PowerMacs. It requires only System Software version 6, but takes advantage of System 7 features when available. The steps to use Birthdays and Such are simple: You type important dates into a text file (just modify the sample Reminders file that's part of the package). And you set Birthdays and Such to run every time you start your Macintosh. (Simple instructions are in the manual) Then every time you turn on your Macintosh, it starts up Birthdays and Such. The program looks up the current date and scans the Reminders file for upcoming events. And voila, in the topmost window on your screen, it displays just those--the ones you need to do something about. It's at this point that I write myself a short note to buy a card, or I pull out the card I bought earlier. Birthdays and Such is What'sItWorthWare--that is, you decide what Birthdays and Such is worth. (If you use it, it's worth _something_.) Enjoy! CyberAssistant is a Control Panel that gives your Macintosh a personality. It takes advantage of Apple's PlainTalk=81 software, giving your Macintosh a voice with which to speak. You can have your system speak to you each time it is started, have your system speak to you when it has been idle for too long, or speak the time each half-hour. CyberAssistant is customizable, allowing you to turn on and off each option as you see fit. CyberAssistant is not just a voice for your computer, but also an assistant. It can alert you at startup when your startup disk falls below a certain amount of disk space. It can also configure certain aspects of your system at startup so that you can more reliably count on your system being configured a certain way. For example, CyberAssitant can turn on or off file sharing at startup, set the color depth of you main monitor, and empty the trash. These options are all performed at startup, allowing you to count on your system starting up in a consistent way (a real nice feature for those who share systems with multiple users). If you design web pages with graphics and photos, you have undoubtedly had PC users say that your photos are too dark... well, at least it has happened to me quite a bit! :) I wrote GammaToggle to allow a Mac user to very easily toggle back and forth between the two standard gamma settings so that adjustments can be made. (PCs usually have uncorrected gamma, Macs default to corrected gamma, although with newer system software you can change the gamma in the Monitors & Sounds control panel, or "options" in Monitors control panel. -- cumbersome!) How do I install it? Drag the GammaToggle FKEY file (disguised as a font suitcase) to the =46onts folder in the System Folder. That's it! If you want to change the FKEY from the default setting of "9", then you must use ResEdit to change it. (If there is demand, I'll write an app to change it.) How do I use it? Hold down shift-command and press 9. (If you have multiple monitors, move the mouse pointer to the desired monitor.) If nothing happens, or you hear a system beep, that means that the monitor doesn't support gamma setting. >System requirements: - System 7.5 or better. (May crash on older systems.) - Should work on any Mac that supports gamma fading using standard device driver mechanism. (Tested on a Quadra 800 and PowerMac 8500/180.) Phil, over the past year or so there have been ongoing discussions of this subject in the Info-Mac Digest, with several detractors maintaining that DA-II is an unadulterated evil, and as many proponents saying that it can be made to work. I am in the latter camp, and will give up this (admittedly antiquated) Extension only "when they pry it out of my cold, dead hands." I am currently using it with System 7.5.5 on a IIci, and with 7.6 on several PPC's. Moreover, I have used it continuously since at least System 6.0.8 (which I still occasionally boot on the IIci - you oughtta see how fast the screens re-draw!). IMO, Apple should have overhauled their Open and Save dialogue long ago (cf. the Atari ST's "Universal Item Selector" of about 1989 vintage), but that's another story altogether. The secret, for me, is keeping DA-II loose in the System folder, so that it loads next-to-last ("Click, There it is!" loads dead last, but only because it has been renamed with the letter e in front of it, so that alphabetically it follows DA-II. "Click..." partially overcomes yet another shortcoming in the Mac's abysmal O & S interface). However, as they often say in this forum, "your mileage may vary." Mark E. However, its high price and poor external monitor support (the internal and external monitors cannot show different images: video mirroring is the best you can do) have made me think twice, so I'll probably wait for the 300MHz version in spring 1998, unless it's afflicted by the same problems. In the meantime, my 540 is starting to feel poky, so here's what I'd like to do: 1. Add RAM. Memory Technologies (800-950-8411) has a 32MB SIMM for $199; other sources may be able to meet or beat that. 2. Upgrade the Processor. (Yes, I know the 540's puny bus speed is going to be a bottleneck, but I can't afford a bigger bottle right now. :) I have three main upgrade options: a. Sonnet Technologies (800-786-6260) sells a full 66/33 68040 with FPU for $249 (price after 68LC040 trade-in). This would be the cheapest option, but the least gain, and I really wouldn't use the FPU much. b. Sonnet also offers Apple's 100MHz 603e with 8MB for $399 (price after trade-in). This would be the cheapest PPC upgrade, and the RAM would be nice, but 100MHz is kinda lame these days, especially for a 603e. c. Newer Technologies' 167MHz NuPowr upgrade sells for around $600 (with no RAM) or $700 (with 8MB). It says it "replaces the 4MB 68040," so it sounds like I would get 40MB on-board if I add a 32MB SIMM. Right? I wonder if that's true of the Sonnet 100MHz/8MB upgrade as well. Oh, if I get the NuPowr, the $80 trade-in rebate expires on March 31. (P.S. Would either of the PPC upgrades include an FPU?) 3. Upgrade the RAM Cache. Do I need to do this? What's the advantage? What about price? And wouldn't a PPC upgrade come with a cache anyway? 4. Upgrade the VRAM, if possible. My current external monitor is 640x480x256, so the existing VRAM is fine. However, I'd like to drive 16 million colors (dithered web graphics are the pits :), or at least thousands. Can this be done from a PB 540? 5. Upgrade the hard drive. The 340MB HD is okay, but as long as I have the machine open, I might as well put in a gigabyte, assuming they make a gig drive for the PB 500-series. I can't find any at my usual sources. 6. Upgrade the internal monitor to active matrix color. Probably not cost-effective, especially seeing as I'm still on the original NiCds, which will face increased drain from the color monitor. Probably the cheapest way to upgrade the monitor would be to buy a 540c equipped as stated above and sell the 540. A new/refurbished 540c/20/500/19.2 goes for around $2000; I should be able to get around $1200 for my 540. 7. (My external modem is just fine for now, so I don't need an internal.) Bottom line: I know I can boost the 540 to its maximum power for far, far, FAR less than even the 3400/180's street price, and until the 300MHz version arrives in 1998, maxing out my 540 sounds like the best way to retain my investment. The reason for my inquiry is that I am trying to help someone who is interested in putting together a very basic hobbyist's analog-to-digital setup on his Mac, within a very minimal budget. Several years ago, I did this very thing by modifying the BMUG (later Farallon) MacRecorder sound input kit. If he can find an old MacRecorder for sale cheap, he might do the same. Failing that, he might try building something from scratch. I found in some of my dusty old files from 1991 a reference to plans and a kit for something called SID (Sound Input Device). Does anybody know anything about the availability today of such plans or kits? Actually, any kind of low-price kit that offers analog-to-digital capability for Mac hobbyists, independent of whether it's for sound or not, would be nice to know about. Most of the commercial A/D packages that I am aware of (such as the very nice products made by National Instruments) are just too pricey for this guy's budget.
