The digest is a collection of article threads from the internet newsgroups comp.sys.mac.programmer.help, csmp.tools, csmp.misc and csmp.games. It is designed for people who read news semi-regularly and want an archive of the discussions. If you don't know what a newsgroup is, you probably don't have access to it. Ask your systems administrator(s) for details. If you don't have access to news, you may still be able to post messages to the group by using a mail server like anon.penet.fi (mail help@anon.penet.fi for more information). Each issue of the digest contains one or more sets of articles (called threads), with each set corresponding to a 'discussion' of a particular subject. The articles are not edited; all articles included in this digest are in their original posted form (as received by our news server at ee.mcgill.ca). Article threads are not added to the digest until the last article added to the thread is at least two weeks old (this is to ensure that the thread is dead before adding it to the digest). Article threads that consist of only one message are generally not included in the digest. KnowledgeMiner was created by an international team of experts in the areas of cybernetics, statistical modeling, mathematics and computer science. Now more then ever better software tools are needed to mine the mountains of information that are accumulating in the world and available on the internet. KnowledgeMiner transcends both neural nets (NN) a part of artificial intelligence (AI) and traditional statistics using new techniques and based on GMDH modeling theory that has already been very successful in decision support in economy (analysis and prediction of economical systems, stock market, sales and financial predictions, balance sheet prediction), ecology (analysis and prediction of ecological processes like air and soil temperature, air and water pollution, drainage flow, Cl- and NO3-settlement, influence of natural position factors on harvest, growth of wheat), and health (diagnosis of cancer in complex cases). The above examples come with the free downloadable version of KnowledgeMiner. Self-Organized modeling is quite new and KnowledgeMiner is the first and only software tool of this type. Professionals in many areas can benefit by downloading this tool and using it to mine in their field to tap new discoveries. KnowledgeMiner is based on the insights of the revered Ukrainian cyberneticist, A.G.Ivakhnenko, who was discouraged by the fact that many types of mathematical models require the modeler to know things about the system that are generally impossible to find. In fisheries modeling, for example, the modeler may be required to know the migration patterns of certain species of fish, or the fertility levels of certain age groups. If modelers are forced to make wild guesses at these variables, they can hardly expect to produce a model with a great deal of reliability as to prediction. Past efforts of using the known tools of artificial intelligence were not, in many cases, successful. That is, because previous methods of artificial intelligence and statistics are based on knowledge extraction using subjective and creative human skills for model building (called the knowledge engineering bottleneck). I'm having a strange problem with Photoshop, any help will be appreciated. Here is what I did: 1) Booted my Mac with a Zip disk containing System 7.5.5. 2) Copied the Photoshop preferences from the internal HD to the Zip disk. (The internal HD is my normal startup disk.) 3) Ran Photoshop off the internal HD. Edited a few files on the Zip disk. 4) Quit Photoshop and rebooted with the internal HD as the startup disk. 5) Launched Photoshop. When Photoshop gets to the point of "scanning for plugins" it stops and asks for the now unmounted Zip disk. 6) Click cancel. Photoshop asks for the Zip disk two more times, then gives up and continues starting up. It then works fine. I've tried trashing the preferences file, and resetting the location of the cache file and the plugins folder. It still asks for the Zip disk three times every time I start it. BTW, the Zip disk is my "test" system where I install new/suspect software and the HD is my "production" system. Please note that I have been doing this for about two years now with no problems, but this is the first time I have run Photoshop like this. Any ideas? They already ahve MS Word 7. On my Mac I still have 6.0.1 (as far as I know there is no newer version available). They designed the document headers/footers, master pages etc. When I load documents from them, the stuff appears correctly on screen - even in page layout view, but when printing, the stuff appears to be greater than the paper - the upper margin is above paper top, the lower is below bottom and the right is right of right paper margin. Printing the stupp with page setup 95% or so completely ruins the printout, since the tables in header and footer seem to be scaled differently than the text on the page. What do do? You've all seen the kind of post where someone can't get a piece of software to work, had tried everything, is mad as hell, yadda, yadda, yadda. Then someone replies that "I don't know what your problem is. It works fine for me." In early January I posted a message to comp.sys.mac.apps and Info-Mac Digest V15 #8 complaining that Britannica CD 97 was not only buggy and slow but had the audacity to delete all its own files shortly after an error message (triggered by a bug) occurred. I also complained that tech support had been invisible. I followed up in early February (to c.s.m.a & Info-Mac V15 #21) that tech support was still being invisible. Well tech support eventually did contact me, and seemed genuinely baffled at the symptoms I was getting. It sounded like they really wanted to get to the bottom of this, and they scheduled a conference call for a few days later. I had run a conflict test back in January and had "proven" that their program blew up with only Apple extensions running. But if I was soon going to be talking with a couple of techies, I'd better review my data. This time I did things a bit differently. I reasoned that since the Britannica search engine is AppleScript based, I would include Scripting Additions in the conflict test. Aha! I could now make this fatal problem come and go! Part of the file deletion problem (and all of a previously hidden killer) seem to be caused by an Addition called 5HOTA Speech OSAX(FAT), which was a remaining part of an installation of something I picked up at Info-Mac and later trashed. Summary: Britannica CD 97 does NOT trash its own files WHEN INSTALLED PROPERLY! It is somewhat buggy, but not seriously so. And there are workarounds that work. Because its content comes from the Dead-Tree-Edition of the Britannica, there is a whole lot of information packed on this CD, but don't expect any big multimedia flash. Yes it IS very slow. Being based on both Netscape and AppleScript, it takes a while to do even a simple search. I'm not throwing away my Grolier's or American Heritage, but I'm holding on to Britannica too. I would like to comment on this though. 1. The second entry; "System 7.6 only supports 32-bit addressing. 24-bit addressing is no longer supported. If the computers' Parameter RAM (PRAM) settings indicate that the machine is in 24-bit mode at system startup, the PRAM is set to 32-bit addressing and the computer is restarted." 2. ...and the following which is also in the note: "Mac OS 7.6 cannot be installed on the following models: IIcx, IIx, Powerbook 100, Classic, II, LC, SE/30, Portable, Plus, SE, 512ke, 512, 128, and Mac XL. Also, current versions of Mode32 from Connectix do not allow Mac OS 7.6 to be installed on older Macintosh computers utilizing this extension for 32-bit compatibility." =========================================================================== Some of these machines were obsoleted some time ago, and that, for the most part was WELL PUBLICIZED prior to it happening. The entry in #1 (to my knowledge), doesn't appear anywhere else except in this technote. The point here is that a MAJOR behavioral change has taken place in the OS without proper advertising. End-users don't want to be surprised like this, even though they understand that something like this aids to progress in the OS. Let's face it, it was sneaky. Not only that, but Apple tech support just plays dumb. Why is it that you knew where to find this, but Apple tech support didn't? Why doesn't Apple tech support follow up on the STILL-OPEN support call that I placed last week? Allow me to editorialize. This now goes far beyond this one problem. After a slew of claims, video tapes, stickers, documents, and a lot of promises from Dr. Amelio, here is the acid test; a support call placed for a new OS. The technician hangs up on the customer because he doesn't have a clue as to what the customer is talking about. The customer calls back and escalates the issue to a senior representative who apologizes, gives much lip service, and says "he doesn't know, but he wants to find the answer." He gives his, and takes the customer's email address. The customer finds out why/where the problem is happening, and sends the information in an email to the rep. No reply/ no ack. Posting the problem to Info-Mac yields several letters from other users, because apparently, the problem is not limited to just those machines. Apparently rather expensive workgroup servers will no longer boot, and now issue the (professional) "Bluets and Granola Make A Chewy Snack" message, instead of the usual Welcome message. Apparently, Apple is keeping this very, very quiet. The bottom line here is that Apple can't expect anything from customers and end-users who repeatedly get the shaft because they chose to purchase Apple equipment. Compatibility across lines was _always_ a major goal of _earlier_ Apple OS developers. Clearly, that has been lost along with credibility. Perhaps in its hasty attempt to return to profitablilty, Apple has fired some of the wrong people. In my particular case, Apple has demonstrably dropped all support for the IIe board. Ok, I can go to Sun for $99 and get a brand new IIe. Not the worst situation, but NOT what I want/need. If Apple wanted to give me the warm and fuzzy and keep me as a customer, it should open up the driver and application source for the IIe board as "unsupported". Then I can play with the code to make it work under 32bit mode, and have one of my EE friends make a minor change to the hardware so that it maps into nuBus properly. Then all folks in the same boat can benefit. As far as the other folks with theose useless workstations, I'd expect that Apple will find many of them switching to NT servers, and rightfully so, unless it takes action to give them the warm and fuzzy too. Thanks for the update Chaz, and thanks to all those who wrote to me supporting this investigation and its philosophy. -Andy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 May 1997 04:31:52 +0000 From: dw thomas Subject: Type 10 & Type 11 Errors I've heard about them but didn't pay much attention to them until they struck me: the dreaded Type 10 and Type 11 errors.
