This was listed in the "Other Clones" section. The thing that was different about these machines was a 128bit data path. 128bit? Not even the Blue and White G3s here in the U.S. have surpassed the 64bit data path on processors, albeit video cards are now 128bit. No present PCs have 128bit processors either. Neither have any of the upgrade card vendors offered it. So has anyone actually seen a Pios and worked with it? Is MacOS X Server optimized for it? Is it possible to get these machines here into the U.S? Now with 128bit datapath on a G3, you are sure to get some impressive benchmarks. Remember what a revolution the DEC Alpha was when it was the first machine to come out with 64bit datapath machines. There was even a Magna (not Magma, but Pios Magna G3/300 Mhz) with 128bit data pat listed. Did this machine actually exist? Does it exist today? If it does, then just the specs alone would mean it is the fastest desktop machine in the world market. Most intriguing. Is Apple planning on expanding the datapath of its own machines in the near future? It would seem easier to expand the datapath of a processor than to make a whole new G4 design. Just curious. Butler" Subject: A description of what ADD is (was: ADD is Apple's best kept secret) I recently posted a message to a number of lists touting the greatness of the ADDs and pointing that AGAIN Apple created a great tool that they stuffed in a closet and forgot about. After those posts I received a bunch of emails from people who had no idea about what the ADDs are. (This proves my point about Apples missteps). For everyone who does not know what the ADDs are I will give you a brief description and point you in the direction to read more and download them from the Apple site. ADD stands for Apple Data Detectors. The Apple Data Detectors is a combination of a control panel, an extension and AppleScript that adds functionality to your contextual menu. (Control-mouse click). Once you install the components, you can highlight text in ANY program and then control-click. This brings up a contextual menu which will search through the highlighted text and will extract specific items (items it is trained to look for) and then it presents you with actions you can do with these items. It is hard to explain, so I will describe it through some examples. Currently there are modules which will search highlighted text for email addresses; ftp addresses; http addresses; newsgroup names; US Cities and US States. They have been promising Currency and World Geography for a long time, but it looks like they have completely written off the ADDs and are not going to create the Currency or World Geography module. (Maybe they will, but are just to busy to write the scripts). (I haven't tried it, but it is suppose to be pretty simple to create specific modules so you can actually create modules to suit your needs). A developer kit is also available on the ADD page. Back to my example. EXAMPLE PARAGRAPH: Jim Butler whose email address is jbutler3@san.rr.com told me that his favorite web sites are http://www.apple.com, http://www.htmlguru.com and http://www.eye4u.com. Jim currently lives in San Diego, California. EXAMPLE: You could highlight this text in any type of application (e.g. your mail reader, MS Word, SimpleText or even the Notepad) and then bring up the contextual menu with control-click. The contextual menu would now give you the following options: jbutler3@san.rr.com--add to address book, send a message with your assigned mail program san.rr.com--connect with telnet application, open with any web browser installed on your computer. http://www.apple.com--bookmark in each of your browsers, open with each of your browsers or copy to the clip board (this would be the same with all 3 of the http addresses). www.apple.com (and the other web addresses without the http prefix)--connect with telnet application, open with any web browser installed on your computer. (again the same with all three addresses.) San Diego, California--Get Map for US City, search for zipcode for US City SUMMARY: This is just a very short example. This feature comes in VERY handy for searching through large paragraphs for web addresses and for other types of data. I use it a lot when I receive an email that is copied to a bunch of people and I want to just reply one of them or if I want to add one or two to my address book or if I want to send a completely new message to one or more of them. It saves a lot of time by automating the tedious process of trying to specifically highlight just one email address and then copy and past it into a new email or new address book card using AppleScript. It may not sound so great, but once you start to use it, you really grow to appreciate it. This brings me back to my original post. Apple created this great tool, but they have never promoted it and they don't even include it on their OS CD-ROMs. The only way to get it is to download it from from the Apple web site (where it is pretty much hidden too). Here is the page, check it out for a further description. Download it, it is free, and try it out if you don't find it useful then you can just trash the control panel and extension. (You do need to have Apple Script installed, but you can get it off your OS CD-ROM or download it from the Apple site too.) http://www.apple.com/applescript/data_detectors/ You can also find more examples along with gif pictures and even a quicktime movie of the ADDs in action. I hope that this answers your questions. If anyone downloads it and installs it I would love to hear how you like it. If my post sparks enough interest and I get feed back from may of you I will take the initiative to try and get Apple to work on the ADDs more and finally complete the other modules and maybe even start to promote it. I look forward to hearing from you. Virtual Memory in the Memory control panel - getting more RAM when you can afford it is a must, if your system can support it. The beauty of the Mac, is that virtual memory is unnecessary if you have enough RAM. Virtual Memory is 100 times slower than conventional memory. 5. Disabling the ATI extension which accesses the video card. 6. Millions of colors when unnecessary 7. I now have three drives on the internal bus (2 are Fireballs, both 2GB), and one external. Since installing the new drive, I can no longer reboot the machine. If I try to restart, the machine hangs with a gray screen showing the cursor arrow. Sometimes the cursor is active, sometime not, but it never goes on to a happy Mac (or to anything else). If I power down, the machine boots fine. The jumpers all seem to be right, and all the drives show up correctly. The original fireball is at the end of the SCSI chain, and is terminated. None of the other devices are terminated (on the internal chain -- the last device on the external bus is, of course). Any ideas on what is happening? ---- Sounds like the driver software is corrupt. I had an APS drive that did the same thing. I had to start off another drive, let that drive spin up then connect the SCSI cable for the drive so that the APS drive software could reinstall the driver for the drive. PS Norton Disk Doctor seems to conflict with the APS drivers. Hope this helps. She was thrilled, so I decided to be a nice son and upgrade the hard drive for Mother's day. Well, I got the hard drive, but in the meantime, she stuck in a floppy disk backwards and damaged the floppy drive. I got a replacment for that, installed it and the hard drive. Then the video quit working. I have replaced the logic board, the RAM, and the "Jedi Interconnect Board". Still no video. Oddly enough, the screen does come on, so it is like there is a loose connection somewhere. I have checked all the connections and they all seem sound. The speaker does not work, and I get no startup chime. However, the PowerBook appears to boot, the HD spins up, and it would appear that it is booting up. It also appears to boot from a floppy disk. I am looking for some Apple technical manual information that will help me solve this nightmare before I sink any more money into this PowerBook. I am thinking at this point, maybe just getting another PB 150 might be the best bet. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance. Hi, I've got a spare 2.1g UltraSCSI drive from a PowerCenter Pro that I'd like to put into my PowerMac 6100 as a replacement for its current standard SCSI drive. Will this work, or do I need to get a standard SCSI drive instead? Thanks, -Tim -- Tim Rueger Crystal Semiconductor, Building 3 Phone: (512) 912-3420 4210 S. Does anybody know of such a book? Or barring that know enough about VB in excel to recommend a Winders book that would do in a pinch for a Mac user? thanx Steve -- ------------------------------------ Steve Chambers, Systems Analyst Sarnoff Corporation 609-734-3017 ------------------------------------ -------------------------------- --Info-Mac-Digest-- End of Info-Mac Digest ******************************
