Besides needing the Apple CD ROM driver, it may also need support files for other formats of disk. The CD drivers usually install with support for High Sierra, Audio, ISO 9660, Foreign File Access and maybe UDF volume access. She may be missing some of these on the PB and coincidentally have toasted the CD in that format. - Scott Remove the "spamless" to return eMail to me. Could it be that you've got some really large/demanding web page open in Explorer when you get the message but you've closed it by the time you've checked the "about" box? Sherlock's memory requirements are going to vary pretty widely too. I've got alot of .src files in mine and have had to allocate 4 times the suggested RAM to it so it wouldn't run out of memory. Any help would be greatly appreciated. David: We've had some luck using HP JetDirect boxes. They emulate a windows spooler so the PeeCees can see and print to the printer as if it were captured by a spooler but it also allows Macs to print to it. It connects 10baseT to the parallel port on the printer bypassing the AUII or 10baseT on the printer. For the most part this has worked well for us on a number of LW 16/600's but we've had a couple failures that seemed to come from faulty JetDirect boxes. They'd allow PeeCees to print but mess up the Mac printing. It must have been a bad ROM revision typ thing 'cause swapping the JidDirect fixeds it. To digitize the sounds into .aiff files I used a shareware called "Sound Sampler" for a while. Then I switched to Macromedia's "SoundEdit 16". They both allow you to record directly to disk and then to fade the beginning and end in and out. The added advantage of the SoundEdit 16 is that it'll pull tracks directly from CD and convert those to AIFF too. There are other utilities that do this so if you don't plan on doing it frequently then save your money and go with the Sound Sampler. It's interface isn't quite as nice and it hasn't been updated in a couple years but it does the job. To get the .aiff files onto CD you need Adaptec's "Toast" or better yet, "Jam". - Scott Remove the "spamless" to return eMail to me. A few tips: 1) Start up your computer and let the monitor sit (turned on) for about a half an hour before you do any calibration/adjustments. It takes the Studio Display LCD about 30 minutes to "warm up" completely. 2) Be sure to read the instructions for "getting the best picture" that came in the box with the display. Do everything else _before_ you do the color calibration. 3) As for the color calibration, the best way to do it is to put the color calibration dialog smack in the center of the screen, and then position the screen so that you are looking directly at it, getting the angle that provides you with the clearest, brightest picture. Then do the calibration. Another tip... when you do the "three Apples" part of the calibration, don't look directly at each Apple. Look at the one next to it when you are adjusting the levels. This sounds strange, but it will give you a better level. For example, when you are adjusting the setting for the left apple, look at the middle apple so that you are seeing the left apple via peripheral vision. Set the level for it when you can't tell the difference between the apple and the surrounding area (via peripheral vision). Getting this setting correct is sometimes very difficult if you look directly at the apple, but very easy to do with peripheral vision. Try it! >So, should I give up with the idea of using the display for >hue-sensitive, colour-sensitive work with photo-editing and >photo-retouching and get an additional analogue tube-monitor for >colour correction? Or am I missing something? LCD panels are unfortunately not a good for color-sensitive (colour-sensitive for you Canadians ;-) ) work. Because of the variance between brightness and contrast across the screen, they just aren't as accurate. But they are usually easier on the eyes because there is no annoying continual screen refresh like on a CRT. I haven't tried any other programs yet, but something seems very wrong - and we need the printer for one of our students who has to hand in her thesis by next week, so any help is greatly appreciated. And while I'm here - how do I find out which graphic card our G3 (desktop, 233 MHz) has so that I can turn off unused extensions? Thanks to all who can offer advice, and please reply directly to me and I will summarize for the list: m.winter@auckland.ac.nz Markus -- Dr. Markus Winter Department of Molecular Medicine Room 3301 School of Medicine 85 Park Road Grafton Auckland New Zealand Tel: 373 7599 ext 3960 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Aug 1999 14:20:30 EDT From: NeoMarktng@aol.com Subject: HELP! Apple AudioVision14 Monitor, 11" viewable Hi, I have a Mac 71/66AV with a AudioViosion14 with the High density cable that is hard wired, that has now a 11" viewable area on the screen instead of the 13" it's supposed to have. I have done everything to try to correct it: new sys, updated monitor software, reset monitor and tried all kinds of 3rd party stuff. It also will not allow me to turn off that it thinks a TV set is connected to it and so my cursor disappears to a ghost sceen when moved to the border of the monitor so it's seeing 2 desktops. I am going blind with such a small view area and have called Apple, went to tech info etc. with no luck. They are not sure either...... Really need some help. The 3-D icons exist in the Appearance extension. If you are brave/bold/foolish enough to modify this, always, _Always_, *ALWAYS* operate on a copy of the file. This isn't just another ResEdit safety tip, but an absolute requirement when dealing with System Folder files. But instead of modifying any system files, get Kaleidoscope and take a few moments to learn how to create scheme files. This is a much safer and more elegant way. (If slower and memory consuming... but you've got a G3, you can spare a few cycles) * All opinions expressed are yours; you have only yourself to blame. * ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Aug 1999 15:41:12 -0500 From: Chaz Larson Subject: Need help changing default system icons At 1:28 PM -0400 8/10/99, Jesse Shaver wrote: >I'm running a OS 8.0 on a G3. Your plan might not have the effect you want, but more on that later. >I assumed that the default icons would be in the system file, but when I >opened it in ResEdit, the icons it displayed in the icl8 resource were >old-looking, 2D folders, whereas the default on my computer is 3D blue >folders. If that particular icon resource isn't stored in the system file, >where is it? They are in the System file. I just checked the System File on my MacOS 8.0 and 8.1 CDs, and the icons are the flat blue ones. The angled 3D ones first appear in the stock MacOS in 8.5. If you're running MacOS 8.0 and you have the angled folders, you must have Kaleidoscope [or Aaron or NewLook or something like that...] installed. If you were running MacOS 8.0 without any third-party extensions, you could modify those ICN# resources and every new folder would get your replacement icon. If you're running Kaleidoscope [ or Aaron or ...], you could modify its resources to the same effect. However, this will not accomplish your stated goal of making "new folder[s] ... come with a custom icon". It will make the default icon change *on your machine*, but if you copy one of these folders to another Mac, its icon will revert to the standard one, since the folder really wouldn't have a custom icon. As far as the MacOS is concerned that folder would have the default icon, which on your machine would happen to be a picture of Charlie Tuna or whatever. Maybe that's good enough for your purposes. If you really wanted to add a custom icon to every new folder, you could gin up a little AppleScript that would create a new folder in some location and actually give it a real custom icon that would travel with it. Actually, the problem is that our Unix systems are starting to break down and rather than put a ton of work into fixing them, we're taking the opportunity to move stuff over to more modern setups. Frankly, as a general Macintosh mailing list, the Info-Mac Digest isn't serving any unique needs any more. What's more important in our minds is the Info-Mac Archive, which remains one of the most important methods of distributing Macintosh software on the Internet. That's where we've been focusing most of our attention (and where most of the problems have been occurring). But don't worry, work is being done behind the scenes. Things just take a bit longer than would be ideal sometimes when you're talking about a non-profit, volunteer organization like Info-Mac (which isn't true of any of the Web resources you mention). cheers... -Adam -- Adam C. They wanted to install everything from both World Book Encyclopedia CDs that came with the iMac onto the hard drive. They did not want the CDs to disappear in use by the 6- thru 12-aged users. I first installed the basic application; then the data from each of the two CDs onto the HD, and labeled them exactly the same as each CD is labeled. I put them into the World Book folder. I have done similar things with CDs many times, and they always have worked fine, but this application keeps calling for the appropriate CD. I emailed the World Book folks, who answered there is no way to make it work that way. I find it hard to believe. Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!
