Assuming you're running Mac OS 9, this is a known bug. Open the Energy Saver control panel, click the Advance panel, and de-select "Preserve memory contents on sleep." All OS 9 users of iBooks and iMacs should follow this procedure unless/until a real fix is issued. Meanwhile, Apple has issued a temporary "fix" which disables that option, instead of fixing it so it works.
