Any comments and/or suggestions would be much appreciated. 1. I use a Sony Trinitron Multiscan 100 ES 15" monitor which has a power-saving capability. Twice it has gone into power-saving mode on startup and wouldn't come out of it (as evidenced by the tell-tale light staying yellow instead of turning green as soon as it received video signals.) The first time it happened, I believe what I did to get out of this condition was to zap the PRAM (although I can't recall that with certainty as that was several months ago.) It happened again a week or so ago and nothing I tried seemed to have any effect. I finally borrowed an Apple 13" monitor from a friend nad used that (with no problem) for several days. Today I tried the 100 ES again and it worked fine. What's happening here? Why did it quit functioning normally? What made it come back? What should I do the next time it happens - put goat entrails on the keyboard at midnight? 2. I wanted to set up a local-talk network between the Performa and my laptop. I am running OS 8.0 on the Performa and had originally not installed the file-sharing capability so I attempted to boot from the OS 8.0 CD to correct the ommision. The boot process gets to where the OS desktop background is showing and the progress bar at the bottom of the screen is showing some degree of progress and then suddenly I get an error window that says "Sorry - a system errorr has occurred - bus error - To temporarily turn off extensions, retart and hold down the shift key." Somewhat dubiously I tried holding down both the shift key and the "C" keys during startup but that didn't seem to help although I can't remember exactly what happened. Then I used Extension Manager to restart from the CD with all extensions off and got the same error message. The same thing happened when I tried using Base OS 8 in the Extension Manager. Yet, if I try to boot from my Norton Utilities CD everything works fine. Do I really have a bus error? If so, what do I do about that? I originally successfully installed OS 8 on this computer from this same CD. 3. I installed Netscape 4.7 from CD (apparently successfully) but when I try to lauch it, I get the Netscape splash screen for about 13 seconds and then it disappears and is replaced by en error box that says "The application Netscape Communicator has unexpectedly quit because an error of type 1 has occurred." I used the same CD to install Netscape on my laptop (which is running OS 9.0) and it seems fine there. I am at a total loss to understand what is going wrong and what I should do about these problems. TIA for any help anyone can offer. YP Image is designed to assist teachers and students when they study image formation by mirrors and thin lenses (geometrical optics). It computes the location and magnification of the image formed by a spherical mirror or a thin lens, and draws a ray diagram on the screen. The diagram may be printed, copied to the clipboard, or saved as a PICT file. New in this version: Instructions added in the "numerical values" window make it easier to use. Revised documentation and some minor aesthetic changes. I use the Sony Spressa iLink Firewire burner with the Discribe software to automatically back up my drive. It is apparently the only drive that works with Retrospect Express for automatic back ups. I have had absolutely no trouble with the drive, I just plugged it in and it worked. :-) This particular drive only works with the B/W G-3's but I'm sure Sony has others that work with other Macs. The history for the specified number of days is retained. Type "about:global" in the url box to get it all. Too bad it's so slow, but you could bookmark it, and the Find function helps when using it. iCab keeps its whole history available on the menu. ======================================= Alternate email addresses (checked infrequently): johnrethorst@netscape.net jcr2@cornell.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 May 2000 21:18:19 +1000 From: Bob Lyon Subject: Starting up from DVD-RAM disks - Update (?) My earlier posting reported that: "I'm getting nowhere fast trying to start up my G4/450 (System 9.0.4) from a DVD-RAM disk. I've initialised it using Drive Setup, updated drivers, and copied all my system software to it (plus a couple of applications) from the hard disk. Drive Setup recognises the DVD-RAM disk as a startup disk, as does the Startup disk control panel. I've tried: holding down 'c' (which works on CD-ROMs such as the G4 software install disk); using command-opt-shift-delete to bypass the hard disk on startup; and changing the startup disk in the control panel on both the hard disk and the DVD-RAM disk. No success! any suggestions? TIA. " In January 2000, MacFixit reported that: A recent TIL article (#60235) states that: "Under Mac OS 9, the Help System incorrectly states that DVD-RAM media may be formatted by Drive Setup and suggests that a DVD-RAM disk could serve as a startup device if properly formatted. Drive Setup does not currently support formatting of DVD-RAM media nor is there currently provision for starting up from DVD-RAM discs." But this does not imply that you cannot startup for a CD-ROM disk." Any further updates to this? Thanks again for the responses. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 May 2000 15:07:00 -0400 From: Patricio Mason Subject: Starting up from DVD-RAM disks. >I'm getting nowhere fast trying to start up my G4/450 (System 9.0.4) from a >DVD-RAM disk. The only time I could not, turns out I was trying to start up from the wrong (i.e., non-system) side. If your disk is double sided, perhaps that's something to consider. Just a suggestion.
