I have found the combinion of BBEdit, Distiller, and Reader to be the best overall PS development and viewing setup for my purposes. Distiller is an Adobe rip, for what that's worth, and is very flexible and easily configured. It's memory and disk space requirements are reasonable, and do not change with changes in resolution. In fact, everything is always in high resolution. With GhostScript [1.0], too often it wasn't set to an appropriate resolution or color mode or what have you. For high-resolution work, the memory requirements were extreme. Since everything got ripped to a bitmap, if I viewed a file, then decided I wanted to copy text from it, I had to go to Distiller & Reader and rerip the file to do so. I now open PS files in BBEdit, and cmd-E invokes a Frontier script that: 1. saves the PS file 2. hands the PS file to Distiller 3. opens any resultant PDF in Reader and 4. opens any resultant log back in BBEdit. I have GhostScript 5.0.1, but haven't looked at it yet because I'm so happy with my present system. Of course, GhostScript is free. Distiller is for me, since we're site-licensed for all Adobe products. I don't know if I'd purchase Acrobat on my own just to do this. If anyone wants a copy of my Frontier script, let me know. chazl - 9.23.1997 - chaz@visi.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 1997 06:07:17 -0400 From: Maurice Mike McNeil Subject: [A] PB 1400: single printer/modem port >My Powerbook 1400 has but a single port for printer/modem use, so I can't >use his printer when I'm connected to my ISP and vice versa. > >Is there any way to multiplex that port, both physically and also >software-wise, so I can do both simultaneously? Whenever you throw a file into the trash, the trash can flashes its fat icon but then goes straight back to its emty state. The Get Info and the Emty Trash commands act as if the trash would be really empty, no matter what you put into it. Meantime, the available disk space shows that those files have not disappeared. Every now and then (ussually when putting a file into the trash while it is open) the finder will show in the trash some or all the files that had been piling up in there. If at that time I use the finder's Empty Trash command, the trash is emptied but the usual progress bar is not displayed, the disk space is not recovered, and the files seem to remain somewhere. BTW, using different tools, as Apple's MPW, I have checked that is not just that the files in the trash have become invisible by some reason or other. Here's the glitch. I'm online for a long time, and everything is going smoothly. After a while, I no longer need to be online, so I go offline by closing my connection to the net. For one reason or another, I need to preview a web page I'm writing, so I switch to Netscape 2.02 and load the page. On the page, there is a link to a remote graphic, which Netscape tries to load. Sometimes Netscape tries to open a connection to the Internet; other times it simply leaves the status bar filled and waits patiently for the graphic to appear. If I tell Netscape to stop looking for the graphic, or if I cancel the connection it establishes in order to find it, I will be unable to get back on the Internet later without rebooting the computer. I can log in just fine, but I can't _do_ anything. If I try to visit a website, check e-mail (Eudora Pro 3.1), or look at a newsgroup (YA-Newswatcher 2.4.0), it will sit there idle, unable to find what it's looking for, and no error messages or time-outs will be displayed. Once, I was able to get it going again after quitting all open applications. However, I normally have to restart the computer completely in order to have a working connection again. Restarting is the only 100% reliable method. What's going on here, and how do I fix it? I hate having to reboot every time I absent-mindedly tell Netscape to give me my computer back, and I don't want to be connected all the time I use the machine. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Sep 1997 12:23:16 -0400 (EDT) From: Mark Fiske Subject: IMPORTANT Kaleidoscope question Hello: I am creating a color scheme based on Greg Landweber's "Apple Grayscale" scheme, but, for some unknown reason, the platinum window headers (where the disk info is shown) still show up in "System 7" black-and-white. (A copy of this message has also been posted to the following newsgroups: rec.photo.digital) I'm looking for a digital camera, but since the technology is advancing so rapidly, I want to buy the best one I can, right off the bat, one that isn't likely to be a disappointment when next month's _MacWorld_ comes out. Here are the features I want: * Macintosh-compatible, via serial cable or disk interface (my PowerBook doesn't have a PCMCIA slot). * Maximum image size of 1024x768 or higher. * Both an optical viewfinder and an LCD preview, which can be turned off to save battery life. * A zoom lens. * Macro/close focus capability. * Built-in automatic flash. * Manually-adjustable shutter speed and exposure, as well as full-auto. * Stores at least 20 images at maximum resolution before having to change storage cards/disks/whatever. * Easily expandable storage. If the storage is fixed in size, I want room for at least 50 full-size images before having to upload them. * Ability to selectively delete stored photos from the camera. * Quick recycle time between shots. I'm betting that the better the compression ratio, the longer the delay between shots. * Quick uploading of images, using a batch-load utility, and quick (p)reviewing of images in the LCD. This one is going to be quite important, since the speed of my computer has spoiled me, making me an impatient kinda guy. :) * Uses rechargeable batteries. * AC adapter available if batteries tend to drain quickly. Features which are not that important, or which will be used to determine tie-breakers, are: * Weight * Size * Date-stamping (unnecessary) * Bundled software. Aside from whatever is needed to transfer the photos to the Mac, I don't need much: I already have Photoshop etc. * Image quality. I'm proficient with Photoshop and should be able to compensate for most shoddy digital photos. However, accurate color is always a good thing. Right now, I'm looking at the following models: 1. Sony MVC-FD7. This $700 unit has a 640x480 maximum resolution, which is a drawback, but it also has a 10x zoom lens, so I can crop out what I don't want in the picture and perhaps compensate for the low resolution. It also has a very large (2.5") LCD preview, auto flash, auto/manual focus, macro mode, adjustable shutter speed from 1/60 to 1/4000, rechargeable Lithium-ion battery (500 shots), and it stores up to 40 images on standard 1.4 meg floppies, which are dirt cheap and will load fairly quickly into a Mac (unless it requires DOS-formatted floppies, which can take forever just to mount, especially with 40 pictures on them). 2. Olympus D-320L. Auto focus, optical viewfinder and 2" LCD, auto flash, 1024x768 and 640x480, direct video out to TV/VCR, all-glass f2.8 lens, exposure control, stores up to 30 images (presumably at 640x480) on a 2 meg card, for $700. I've seen the output from this camera: it's quite good. 3. Kodak DC120. 3x zoom, 1.6" LCD, auto flash, 1280x960, up to 20 images (2 megs), for $800. This one has the highest resolution of any on the list for under $1000. A 10 meg card (100 pictures) is $250. 4. Polaroid PDC-2000/4. Yeah, right. At $3000, it's going to take more than its 1600x1200 resolution to justify this purchase decision, especially with a fixed focus lens and an optical viewfinder. If money were no option, I would probably get a digital back for my Nikon N90s instead, assuming they make one for that camera. That way I could use my existing lenses and have extremely high resolution, as well as nearly all the above features. Thanks, Peter! At times its reliability has been spotty, depending on the specific Mac machine, but currently it's running fine on my PowerMac 7300/200 with Mac OS 7.6.1. I've bumped up its memory allocation to 4 Mb. I'm not aware of any other Mac software--freeware, shareware, or commercial--that performs this task. Based on my experience, PS2EPS+ is indeed another option (besides GhostScript or MacGS) for viewing PostScript on the screen. Regarding the other question from Mark Allen about using MacGS 5.01 or GhostScript 3.33 with PS2EPS+, the documentation for PS2EPS+ says: "I have made my own Macintosh port of Ghostscript using 2.3 of the source code. Today [3/19/95] this is quite an old version by [sic] I think it is sufficient for the usage together with PS2EPS+." Does anyone know of alternatives to PS2EPS+? Jeff ================ Jeffrey D. The tool for this is PS2EPS+ (see below). Remember that a file can be DSC-compliant EPS while not containing a preview of any kind, and that a multi-page PostScript file cannot be an EPS file. >I was wondering whether anyone has found a consistently stable solution to >viewing Postscript files on one's screen, rather than just having to print >out the files. To date the 'best' port of Ghostscript/Ghostview to the Mac is the Ghostview (Ghostscript 5.03) which is part of the (shareware) CMacTeX distribution: This allows rendering of EPS graphics on screen, and conversion to PICT bitmaps, providing the PostScript code ends with a showpage command. It also allows viewing and printing (to non-PostScript printers) of PostScript documents, and in particular it allows you to jump straight to a given page in the document *if* it conforms to Adobe's Document Structuring Convention (DSC). >In addition, I've seen out there PS2EPS+ 1.0, which also makes use of the >Ghostscript engine to produce eps files. Does anyone have experience with >this? Stability? PS2EPS+ is an excellent piece of software, as far as it goes. I have used it on an LCIII, Centris 650, and PowerBook 1400cs without any problems. There are a couple of caveats, though: (1) PS2EPS+ uses a very old port of Ghostscript (2.3?), and therefore cannot handle PostScript Level 2, so you have to make sure that the application you use for producing the EPS file is generating PostScript Level 1 code (2) Whilst PS2EPS+ can generate 300 dpi TIFF files from the EPS, it can only add 72dpi PICT previews to EPS files, which is perfectly adequate for seeing what an image looks like and positioning it on the page, but is not adequate for printing to a non-PostScript printer. >Is PS2EPS+ another option for viewing Postscript on the screen? Can >MacGS-5.01 and GhostScript 3.33 be used also to create eps files? I routinely use PS2EPS+ for previewing EPS files when I am trying to adjust their Bounding Boxes, which a number of applications set incorrectly (typically I have this problem with Intellidraw and Gnuplot EPS output, under certain, well-know conditions). PS2EPS+ can only allow viewing of EPS -- it will not handle PostScript files, in particular files that contain more than one page; to view these, use Ghostview or something similar. If we assume that by 'create eps files' you mean 'add a preview to an EPS file', then you should use PS2EPS+, or generate a PICT bitmap using GhostView (probably cropping it in something like Graphic Converter), and then add the PICT as a preview to the EPS file using EPS Fixer.
