This only started after upgrading to 8.6. Mac Fixit reports: Slow screen redrawing If a desktop picture is redrawn slowly after closing a window, your computer might be running low on memory. Set the Appearance control panel to display a pattern, instead of a picture, to speed up the redrawing process. I generally have about 40 Mb free so I don't think thats the issue. However, I did notice that Finder shows 0 free space. So I am wondering if that might be causing part of the problem How do you increase the memory allocation for Finder? It doesn't have the normal Command-I features. -- Doug ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 09:45:29 -0400 From: a brody Subject: (Q) Remote Access and Applescript from 8.6 on 7.6? Dear Digest readers, Has anyone tried to take the Remote Access installation from System 8.6 and use the same files on 7.6 on a 68k Mac? Similarly has anyone tried to do the same with Applescript? I would like to make one common installation for Remote Access to use as dialup instead of PPP if possible. So the real questions are: What is the earliest MacOS version that Applescript 1.3.7, and ApplescriptLib 1.2.2 will work on? Is an installation from PPC going to work on a 68k Mac? If not, which Applescript file do I need to get from Apple that will do both? What is the earliest MacOS version that ARA 3.1.2 will work on? What is the earliest 68k Mac that it will work on if at all? I seem to remember Applescript required Thread Manager on certain machines. Which ones are those, is this OS dependent or machine type dependent? Thank you. To boost the CPU speed (short of a G3 upgrade), I'd max out the memory, and add a 1 megabyte level-2 cache module. I got mine from the L2 Cache Company ($79 for a 60MHz machine, $89 otherwise): http://www.mindspring.com/~l2co/home.html The L2 cache, in particular, was a big win. Don't bother with a 256K cache - go for the 1M. The 6100's video memory is in main memory (not a good architectural decision on Apple's part), but that means video speed is boosted a lot with the L2 cache. I turned a pretty unusable 6100 into a nicely snappy machine this way. It'll even play Ambrosia's Mars Rising reasonably (it was laughingly slow before the cache upgrade). Hi-diddly ho, Info-Mac! I'm trying to find a program that will allow me to put together a QuickTime MIDI file using QuickTime Musical Instruments. I have sufficient MIDI sequencing tools, but I would like to find something that will specifically allow me to access the instruments in QuickTime (preferrably QT3) and punch out a tune. Any thoughts? -- Jon Fullmer ----------------------------- The package said: "Requires Windows 95 or better," so I bought a Mac. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 21:07:34 -0700 From: Chris Schram Subject: [Q] Trouble reading archives On Mon, 14 Jun 1999, Ken Laskey wrote: [snippage] >Now to make matters worse, I haven't gotten Info-Mac issues 308 or any >thereafter. I also have not gotten issues 308+ in my email, though they are still showing up in comp.sys.mac.digest. Something must be broken. I said "Uh Oh" because I just sent in another subscription request. Now I'm concerned that I may soon be getting duplicate issues. And I am thinking of upgrading my Book to PowerPC by upgrading kit, since I found some in local market. Here's a question; I mainly use my Book for Internet(e-mail, www, simple web-authoring), simple photo-retouching, word processing and spreadsheets. Not much complicated photo-retouching and 3D stuffs. Is it good idea for me to upgrade my Book to PPC, or stick with current CPU? I am not sure whether upgrading is effective for me or not.
