These characteristics can all be set by hand, of course, but Neatnik allows you to batch-process the contents of a folder (including all levels of enclosed folders), or an entire disk. For Mac OS 8 users, Neatnik can now set _all_ of the "View" characteristics of each folder it processes. This includes such things as whether "Keep arranged by..." or "Always snap to grid" is set, which column headings are included in list views, the Icon size, and so on. Ordinarily with Mac OS 8, these options have to be set individually for every folder; with Neatnik 2.0, you can set them for a batch of folders (or every folder on your hard disk) at once. Neatnik works on three basic sets of folder window properties: location, size and "View" characteristics. You can choose to change any or all of these properties. Folder window location: The folder window locations can be set to offset from their "parent" (containing) folder's location, so that successive levels of folders will open to "cascading", successively-offset locations on your desktop. Folder window size: Folder windows can be sized in any of three ways: given the same size as their parent folder, set to their "zoomed" size, or set to their "zoomed" height and given their parent window's width. Folder window "View" characteristics: This is the aspect of Neatnik that will be most useful to Mac OS 8 users. As noted above, with Neatnik you can set all the View characteristics for a batch of windows at once, rather than having to painstakingly set them one window at a time. Many Mac users find the "one window at a time" view-setting of Mac OS 8 somewhat of a mixed blessing, or worse. In addition to Mac OS 8 users in general, certain other groups of users will also find Neatnik particularly valuable. Those whose work involves a great deal of folder-navigation -- perhaps on disks received from other users -- will find Neatnik an indispensable tool for keeping things... well... neat! Producers of CD-ROM and other on-disk publications can use Neatnik to process the master copy of their disks before duplication, to ensure that the disk's folders will open in orderly and predictable locations on the end user's desktops. Neatnik is an application. It does not install any System extensions or "patch" the system in any way. Because it is a standard Mac application, rather than a simple compiled AppleScript, it has a sophisticated and elegant user interface for setting its various preferences. PushBtnBach will keep generating new minuets in the style of Bach as long as you can keep pressing the Compose button. Version 2.0 introduces a "continuous mode" where it keeps generating and playing without intervention. Other features include saving as type 1 or type 0 standard MIDI files, real-time instrumentation changes, and a preview of some of the options available with the non-shareware version (check the Options item under the PushBtnBach menu). The program uses a small subset of functions from the Y.M.E. toolkit (YAV Music Engine) to generate a Bach-like menuet using a structural model. This semantic description is expressed in "YMTDL" ("YAV's Music Transformation Description Language"). Generating music from a model is an entirely different approach to that employed by the companion program CyberMozart (which simply simulates the tossing of dice to re-arrange existing musical fragments stored as MIDI chunks, much like the approach taken by many interactive music CD-ROMs which use digital audio chunks insteac of MIDI). The pair of programs (PushBtnBach and CyberMozart) illustrate the difference between the infinite world of interactive music and the finite world of interactive audio. PushBtnBach is a simple demonstration of the Y.M.E. technology. Note that some of the more generic Y.M.E. functions are available as XCMDs and XFCNs in a shareware installer called SCexternals. PushBtnBach a great way to obtain license-free music for your multimedia production. Then in your mail program, paste (command-V). You will get a list of the files in that folder, one per line. Anything tricker, and you will need to download a program. I personally like XCat 1.4.1-e because I can catalog my brother-in-law's System 6 Mac Plus and read the file on my Mac. Usually I bring it into FileMaker Pro, but you have plenty of options within XCat. It didn't crash the one time I ran it under OS8, yet it catalogs 400K floppies too. I respect that in a program, spanning from really old to really new without crashing. It's freeware (postcard) too! - Joni ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Feb 1998 18:09:36 -0800 From: Maurice Mike McNeil Subject: [Q] Appletalk for NT machines We have a mixed office primarily Mac with W95 & NT machines being added to the network. One is called ListFile. That one likely wouldn't interest you, as it doesn't usually add file types to the list (just gives names of contents). The one that does is called PowerScan, and I believe I found my copy on Info-Mac's HyperArchive Root on the WWW. That's probably most likely to make lists like the DOS routine you mentioned. There's also UltraFind, which can be a little slow in doing practically the same thing; even though it's a "Find"-command alternative, I believe it also creates lists. PowerScan uses the Aladdin translators (provided you have Stuffit Lite, Stuffit Deluxe or DSEE) to peer into .sit and .sea files and other archives. You can set the prefs to do this or to ignore anything inside a compressed archive and just name the file in the list. PowerScan also gives the option of saving your lists in either SimpleText or its own (which is a binary-file format, all data fork) format.
