This new version is typically 3 times faster at decoding or combining files than earlier versions. It also better handles long Windows-style filenames. Yet Another Decoder is an application that can decode files that have been encoded using the most common encoding methods (BinHex, MacBinary, MIME Base64, uuencode). It easily handles multiple attachments per post and posts that have erroneously been encoded multiple times. It recognizes and properly decodes many of the unusual and non-standard encodings found in usenet binary posts. It can also recombine binary files that have been split into multiple segments. As a droplet it acts to decode MIME Base64 (including AppleSingle and AppleDouble), BinHex, MacBinary (including MacBinary III), and uuencoded files that are dropped upon it. It assumes that all segments of the original encoded document have been concatenated into the file being decoded, and that the segments are in order. When run as a regular program, the File menu Open command can be used to select files to be decoded individually, combined into one long file, or combined and then decoded. This means it can be used to decode a single file that was saved as multiple attachments, or reassemble a binary file that was segmented prior to being encoded and transmitted. YA-Decoder is $15 shareware. YA-Decoder 3.0.2 requires System 8.5 or later and Internet Config 2.0 is strongly recommended for proper operation. The older YA-Decoder 2.4.1 remains available for people using older system software. Software: Eudora Pro 4.2.2 Platform: PowerBook G3 System: 8.5.1 Problems: (1) The "Settings" menu does not appear. It is present, though, hiding under "Special / Empty Trash." What's happened to "Empty Trash," I don't know. (2) A "Find" box can be displayed with -F, but "Find" does not appear in any menu, and it doesn't seem to be hiding anywhere else, either. Also, the Find box is crippled; it will search for text only in mailbox message titles, not text strings in the messages themselves. I did not have these problems with Eudora Pro 3.0.1 using exactly the same system configuration. Qualcomm help has offered two suggestions: (1) Eudora Pro 4.2.2 needs the "Appearance" extension. However, this extension cannot be enabled, because its function has been incorporated into system 8.5.1. Perhaps the obsolete extension can be restored by turning off the Appearance control panel. However, that seems like a drastic step backwards for the OS, even if it's possible, and it takes Eudora back to a stage prior to version 3. I fail to see the point in it. (2) There is an extension conflict; use system 8.5 Base in the Extensions Manager. I've tried that -- although I had to re-enable PPP -- but it has no effect; the problems remain. Conflict Catcher 8.0.4 did not find any conflicts with Eudora Pro. I have reinstalled the Settings from scratch and rebuilt the desktop. My impression is that Qualcomm help has no experience with these problems and hasn't a clue what to do about them. Is Eudora Pro 4.2.2 partially incompatible with system 8.5.1? Would system 8.6 or Eudora Pro 4.3.1 fix these bugs? Any suggestions will be mightily appreciated. Also, Fetch doesn't let you start a download once one is underway (unless you open a new connection), and MSIE/NN do. Thanks for the pointers! ftp.apple.com/developer had two versions of the Appearance SDK, one being a more recent release than the technotes mention. There must be several thousand Mac system admins who have never touched UNIX before. Their Mac OS servers are running AppleShareIP, maybe MacDNS, maybe EIMS, maybe WebStar, Quid Nunc Pro or even NetPresenz. They want to be able to swap to OS X server and get it running quickly and cheaply. To do this they need to: Set up DNS for their domain mycompany.com with added extensions www.mycompany.com, ftp.mycompnay.com, mailhost.mycompany.com and potentially another virtual host www.othercompany.com. Set up DNS for users client macs, giving them a user name based on their IP address (ie user1.mycompany.com for ip 192.168.1.4 etc) Set up apache to serve files as www.mycompany.com and as a virtual server for www.othercompany.com. Set up sendmail to send and receive mail from Mac OS clients with addresses user1@mycompany.com, user2@mycompany.com etc and for otheruser1@othercompany.com, otheruser2@othercompany.com etc all of whom are obtaining mail from pop3 server mailhost.mycompany.com and sending smtp mail to mailhost.mycompany.com. Set up anonymous ftp access to a public directory through ftp.mycompany.com. Set up secure, password protected ftp access to a directory /local/users/username for user username with a password userpassword. Sounds easy doesn't it? Could even be all done via a perl script or, gosh, someone could learn interface builder and develop a quick app to do it all for you. Any takers?
